2 days running 1C70 cancelled from Reading. Something really wrong??
2T07 school train only 2 cars. 200 pupils squashed in there and they will be identifying themselves not as cats but cattle. Two other short forms as well.

166218 was operating 2T04. I suppose it will be changed over for an IET but can a 166 go on to Cardiff like the castle set yesterday.

2 different trains that failed on 1C70 just a coincidence they made it no further than Reading,

1A81 166218 seems to be cleared to Pad, I’m sure it will be cosy

Yes 166s are cleared to Cardiff and routinely run the Portsmouth Harbour to Cardiff route
What about the Didcot - Bristol Parkway section?

Anyway, it looks like 166218 is returning as the 1436 Paddington-Paignton.

At least Exeter is able to short-form its services. That luxury is not available at Reading for its dmus. So, until 1600 at least, an entire North Downs diagram (start 1O55) and an entire Basingstoke diagram (start 2J03) have been cancelled. A third Reading 165 diagram saw 800033 work the Cotswold shacks service this morning. 800033 original diagram, 1P10 0600 Oxford - Paddington / 1D14 0720 Paddington - Oxford was worked by 387152 + 387155 from/to Didcot.

Reading has not been able to cover the start of service for all of its 165 diagrams for over a week now

Why’s it going that way anyways? There’s no reason for it to, they would send it via Bath most likely if for some reason it needed to go via Bristol, and it is cleared to Didcot that way.

Doubt it, the school trains aren't that bad at the moment with most year 11's doing exams. I did 2T07 and 2T08 last week and both were dead.

I drove past Torre at 8.30 this morning and saw the tail end of them. That must have 30/40.

I use T07 every morning, with two coaches even with exams it was extraordinarily busy

2T07 2 car today. 3 car and a 2 car turbo running 2 diagrams; of the other 5 diagrams only 1 had four cars. Diabolical week

Below are the departures from Exmouth yesterday 20th June. Today is going in a similar way. Single 150s late evening - 2T36 onwards - are not an issue.

Hope this works, have not uploaded an image before!

2T07 yes between Newton Abbot and Torre but at the moment not unbearable as a 2 car, but still pretty rubbish. No idea why its so bad this week.

The IET Situation perhaps? Seems to be a few Turbo's being drafted in to try and recover for the dire availability of the Hitachi fleet, but seemingly failing themselves. I passed another dead Turbo in Reading station last night too.

I'm not sure if running additional Glastonbury specials is having an effect, I've not looked in any detail this year but the extra trains are usually operated by cancelling the PAD-Cardiff services.

The Devon Metro looking pretty dire today at a glance, only one 4 car and one 3 car, all the rest 2 car!

It looks like there’s a general unit shortage. There’s also a 2 car out on the Cardiff to Portsmouth circuit that’s going to be snug! Looks to still be a shortage of IETs too as both the 07:53 and the 07:57 from Swindon to London are 5 cars vice 9 and 10 respectively and were both packed leaving Swindon.

The 150 (150 233) has also broken on the Looe branch.

The Plymouth standby unit (150 266) has gone to to Liskeard to replace it.

Only a little better this morning it appears, with plenty of single 150s knocking about—my train this morning was rather cosy.

Problems further compounded by an HST failure on the 11.00 Cardiff to Penzance, with the 11.30 Cardiff to Portsmouth 4 car 158 being split to provide a 2 car 158 to recover the service to Penzance but does mean both services are now 2 cars instead of 4.

Whilst such short-forming is always an inconvenience, I have to commend GWR as they always (in my experience) appear to make the best effort to keep services going, whether by splitting services, lugging something out of the depot or otherwise reallocating stock.

Yeah, I’m not sure those wedged onto the Portsmouth 158 who are now standing so half of their booked train can go to Cornwall would agree mind.

But ultimately the railway is about getting people from A to B and whilst the preference is to do that in comfort when things go wrong it’s better to have 2 x half length trains then a cancellation as it’s unlikely anybody would actually have been forced off the Portsmouth train just would have had a not so pleasant journey which I think we all know is not ideal but at least keeps people moving.

Sure, but from a selfish point of view they’ve inconvenienced Portsmouth passengers for the benefit of Cornish ones. It’s hard for there to be any winners in these situations.

Or they've inconvenienced Cornish and Devon passengers for the benefit of Portsmouth passengers, in the end we've probably ended up with a few huffs, puffs and tuts but everyone getting to where they're going.

You can argue that either way around ‘from a selfish point of view’. GWR correctly take the pragmatic point of view which is to keep everything moving if possible rather than cancelling one train which would simply overload the following service. Lesser evils and all that.

For those who can't get on, tends to be much easier to get delay repay if cancelled than if you have to argue couldn't fit on.

So lesser of two evils rather depends on if you manage to uncomfortably squeeze on, compared to can't get on anyway.

Regarding the Glastonbury argument, think it has been said before that it is just part of 150+ days of strengthening on GWR network, so shouldn't really be planned at cost of other trains (Cheltenham festival, Henley, Cornish summer beach services, Bath Christmas market etc)

Spot on which overall would have been better for the passenger than sending all 4 class 158 vehicles to either Portsmouth or Cornwall.

And what about those who can't get on the next service because the one before was cancelled and everyone had to wait for this one. I also don't know about you, but when travelling on the railway I, and most other users, have somewhere to be, and I'd much rather having to stand on a packed train than be potentially an hour late, and still have to get a packed train.

To be fair Glastonbury is more intensive than a lot of the ones you have mentioned. Glastonbury is the one of the only ones that attracts tens of thousands on a single day, in a GWR only area of the country. It's also been mentioned in another thread a fuel line failure at North Pole IET meant some DMUs were filling in for IETs, and therefore it was more of a perfect storm.
