GWR Career after redundacy

Hi, I'm being made redundant and a friend of mine has suggested trying to get a job eith GWR. He said if I take any position at first (however low paid) I'll then be able to get a better paid job internally as jobs are advertised internally first. My question is are jobs advertised internally first? Also I can't seem to find up to date info on salaries. Could anyone tell me what a train manager or a gateline assistant could earn and is there any scope for overtime. Thanks for your help

Some vacancies go live internal first, some may appear external at the same time.
Salary depends on location but as an example for a Gateline Assistant at Reading the basic is around the £23k mark. Most places there is scope for a spot of O/T.

Do you think it's beneficial to already be working for GWR when going for a higher paid role such as a Train Manager? To meet my families bills I'd need to earn around 27k and I'm hoping that that is what a train manager would earn. If I could get a lower paid job initially that I could do some overtime in it would make my family finances much easier to manage. I guess I'm hoping that GWR is one of the few remaining companies that promotes it's existing workers and allows them to earn a livable wage. Any guidance you can give will he gratefully received.

I believe Guards / Train Managers are on around £30-40K. Like most jobs, as long as you keep your nose clean and stay "below the radar", there is lots of scope to move between jobs. I could be wrong, but I believe the MD of the company started his career in Station Services and got promoted a fair bit to rise to the MD role. The majority of Train Drivers (who will be on £60k by 2020) started their careers in other roles like Ticket Examiners or working in the buffet cars.

I didn’t start on the Railway until I was 40, I worked on the platform first then 18 months later moved to what I’m doing now. One of my current colleagues was an external candidate and was 50+.

Although I'm not with first , I qualified as a driver with my toc in November and I'm 48 .
