GWR Bristol - Oxford service

Train is almost fully reserved with the vast majority with destination Oxford.
Rather a shame that on week 4 the reason given on PA for reservations not working and Reading destination on external displays is that GWR still haven't added the route to their train computers.

Really was not good seeing people trying to find their reserved seats then finding no empty seats were available.

There is a technical reason that explains why the Bristol-Oxford services are currently having onboard system issues, it isn’t as simple as ‘GWR haven’t added the route’ and I understand that a fix is being sought. In layman’s terms, the system is assuming that a particular piece of data would appear, which in fact (correctly) isn’t the case, but it’s absence is corrupting the system. Rather frustrating but then this is the sort of thing that initial trials can chuck out.

Fixed that for you!

If the problem is known about, can they not put out paper reservations?

How is this service doing? Any data, anec- or otherwise?

Or inside intentions on its future? And relationship w EWR one day?

According to Recent Train Times, the eastbound service is about 5 mins late on average, arriving within 5 mins 4 out of 5 times.

Less good in the return direction:

No inside info, but I don't see this route being merged with EWR at any point. The level of through traffic would be minimal, there'd likely be a disbenefit to the service for passengers to Oxford itself and there's no significant operational savings/bonuses that result from it.

I thought they were planning to extend EWR trains further west?

From https://cdn.prod.website-files.com/...Oxfordshire Rail Corridor Study - Jun '21.pdf looks to be hourly?

What would be the disbenefit for Oxford passengers?

Various proposals have been put forward, nothing particularly firm though. Cowley or Didcot are usually mentioned (as well as Reading by more optimistic groups), but AFAIK running all the way to Bristol hasn't been seriously suggested other than by campaign groups.

Primarily greater delays, although there is potential for capacity issues waiting for a platform slot that meets the timetable paths either side.

EWR is to be run by Chiltern, whilst the Oxford to Swindon service is run by GWR. Even when both come under the OLR umbrella, they are different stock, crews and depots so something would have to change. Never say never though.

I understood Cowley to be a possible extension of EWR.

Nothing much to add other than an observation that Bath is an extraordinary passenger magnet on Saturdays. I experienced it in the summer, when standing all the way from Reading, then seeing the train suddenly almost empty at Bath. Then earlier this month being astonished at what seemed like a whole platform's worth of passengers disembarking at Bath from an ex-Paddington train. No Christmas markets then, and it wasn't a rugby crowd.

It indicates that any service that connects anywhere to Bath on a Saturday is likely to pull in customers.

I would think that if it got to hourly (say, 1tph absorbed into EWR once that is stable etc one day) - it would be a real benefit to Oxford. It would also help making it a through service with platforming at Oxford - both ends.

EWR will be sharing the bays with Chiltern (until a Cowley or other change) - and p5 won't be online for a while as yet.

Hopefully it can grow into a more frequent service throughout the week first - and MKC-Bristol might be a slog - but feels worth a try and may open up some other interesting new connection opportunities. And lots of new pairs which might attract otherwise car users, e.g. smaller ones like Swindon-Oxford and Bicester... or anyone doing M1/M25/M4... who might travel from MK instead.

Surely the platform demands are greater for a terminating service than one going through?
And surely given East West rail is pretty separate from other services the timetable can be pretty flexible?

Not at Bletchley and Milton Keynes it can't.

Bath Spa has to be one of the busiest 2 platform stations in the country. Passenger demand to/from London is only slightly lower than Bristol Temple Meads, despite the latter serving a much larger urban area.

Bletchley it has totally separate platforms from the West Coast Mainline and I cannot imagine for the extension into Milton Keynes there is that much contention?
There are gaps you have to hit between Bletchley and MK. You arent re-writing the slow line timetable.

Is there a direct line between the Bedford line and Milton Keynes, of just in the direction of Bletchley station?

EWR currently uses the bays at Oxford, so won't be able to do that if running through, so it will put greater pressure on the remaining platforms. Equally the terminating service from Bristol doesn't need a gap across Oxford North Jn to tie into, it can just drop into the sidings if needed.

EWR isn't separate from the Marylebone-Oxford service or, as mentioned, the WCML slows. The last bit into MK *is* a minefield for the timetable.

I guess if Oxford gets 4 through platforms, it will ease things. Certainly two expected on the west side.

I think the plan is for one additional through platform (5) - there isn’t a plan to add anything further AFAIK?
The current works are also designed to allow one of the Chiltern bays, (P2?), to be converted into a through platform in the longer term, but as far as I know the additional works required for that cannot start unless or until the existing station building is significantly altered or demolished. However the station building changes are not currently funded.

It wouldn't, unless you build the North to East chord.
For the benefit of newer readers (not including yourself obviously), the possibility of such a chord has been extensively discussed on these forums in the past. There are a lot of buildings in the way, and the likelihood of it ever being built is very small.

Its only small until someone decides it needs building.
