Yes has finished, insufficient stock to continue at the moment, as there is more demand in SW for stock in summer months.

There is no published info, on if and when service will return, and if it does how frequent, or if more days will be added. For time being the public info suggests discontinued indefinitely as nothing about resumption is available.
Hmmm - if the trial was a success you would think there would be some comms.

I guess it depends on what "success" means - sure people may have used it but was it successful enough to warrant procuring new trains?

What I was wondering was if there are sufficient paths to allow the service to run at regular intervals?

Introduction of 175s should directly or indirectly free up a few IETs to do what they were actually designed for instead of trundling around on stoppers.

There may well be communication between GWR and DfT on the matter but it isn’t necessarily for the public domain. GWR have already stated their ambition for a regular 6d/week service between Bristol and Oxford, as have stakeholders along the route (particularly at the Oxford end) so I imagine it’s quite high up the priority list. This suggests there is already a business case for operating it once stock becomes available, whether released by Class 175 deployment or otherwise.

I was going to say, looks like the stock is used for the Pembroke Dock extensions in high summer, which I’d guess was probably a commitment.

It can be accounted for in several ways, as there are also extensions from Plymouth to Penzance, Exeter to Paignton and the Newquay additionals. None of these come off Stoke Gifford directly but they are covered via various rebalancing moves etc. The Pembroke set technically comes off Maliphant.

A shame as it does contradict some intentions (or aspirations) shared here for an hourly week-long service.

Leaves it open for Chiltern/EWR to explore one day too, or the OA. But the 125mph stock must prove handy.

The biggest losers from the service not going to 1tph all-day permanently are probably the Wantage station group...

AFAIK those are still the intentions / aspirations. The initial trial was only ever going to be until Summer 2025.

It would make a lot of sense to link any improvement in service with the launch (when it eventually comes) of East West Rail. Though whether the Class 175 cascade can release enough IET's in time, along with everything else that would need to be done before launch, is a moot point.

At a minimum 175s need to displace some IETs before this service becomes permanent; given 5-car IETs seem to be on a number of Exeter/Plymouth-Penzance diagrams a direct cascade is possible, however there are Intercity services from London also angling for longer formations.

GWR is restarting the service Saturday 20th September until May 2026

10:18 and 15:18 from Bristol, arrives 11:27 and 16:29
12:02 and 17:12 from Oxford, arrives 13:12 and 18:23

Appears there are different trip duration times, and an interval of 300 minutes one way and 310 minutes other direction, possibly due to pathing.

Going to be particularly popular during the Bath Christmas Market once again.

Useful to use in one direction maybe, but 2 1/2 hours in Bath isn't really enough to experience all the delights of a Bath Xmas Market experience. (Apparently - in my mind it would be around 2 hours too long, but there you go!)

Oh yes of course and most will want to stay into the evening so an easy change at Didcot on the return.

Still no Sundays?

Is the rumour about an eventual hourly service still vaguely tracking? Or fallen to wayside due to the Botley Road cluster?

Isn’t it awaiting more rolling stock? I thought this is why it can only run when not needed on a Newquay service.

If GWR can get all 175s into service, this should displace some IETs that work local services in Devon & Cornwall (Penzance-Plymouth/Exeter St Davids). However, an hourly Bristol-Oxford service may not be the first priority for them (even though it will free up space on Bristol-Paddington trains by taking more local passengers off the London services).

Cheers. I did wonder if the 175s were going to help in the long run.

They've surely got more IET's spare haven't they?
GWR are almost always running sets down. There just isn’t the availability, and Hitachi is only required to supply a certain number of 800s, which are already used even if all available.

The GWR mainline group has 140 short forms (below min spec agreed with DfT) in most recent 4 weeks period. Thats 5 or 6 every day.

3.18% of GWR mainline service (those operated by IETs) were cancelled, a proportion of these will be due to lack of serviceable stock. So can add these to short forms above.

Rather suggests they are over timetabling them, so are regularly short, rather than have spares.

Which of course they aren't. No matter how many times you suggest it!

The timetable requires Hitachi to provide 79 IETs (out of 93) on a daily basis.

The issue looks more that Hitachi aren’t meeting their requirement to get the necessary sets GWR require, out in service.

In any case, GWR doesn’t look to have any/many spare DMUs lying around either. The situation will likely be eased once the 175s come in, releasing some DMUs from the Exeter area.

Mark Hopwood speaks quite openly about the 175s helping out in a GWR focus section in Septembers issue of Modern Railways. He mentions that using IETs on Cardiff-Taunton/Exeter is not a good use of such expensive trains.

And as I have said before, no point in having clauses in contracts, if your legal Dept isn't prepared to throw its weight around, day in day out and make sure they are strictly enforced and achieved.

They don't really have any spares, which is why there are so many 2car substitutions for scheduled 3car etc. Also the 8.54% of trains cancelled on South Wales - South Coast includes lots due to train faults (and nothing serviceable in sidings to substitute).
By time remaining HSTs are gone, and the handful of 5car IETs covering some DMU workings replaced, and the extra Cornwall and Bristol area services, will not be many 175s left to ease the DMU shortage.

I’m curious if you’re suggesting that GWR are choosing not to enforce a contract on Hitachi and therefore the IET availability is partly down to failings of the TOC’s legal Dept. Can you back that up with any evidence or is that just your personal opinion?

According to Rail magazine, GWR has applied to the Office for Rail and Road to run a weekday Bristol - Oxford service from May 2026.
Great Western Railway has applied to increase the number of services between Oxford and Bristol Temple Meads.

The operator has been running two trains a day on Saturdays since September 2024.

GWR wants to increase this to eight, running every other hour Monday-Saturday from May 2026 and then double that to hourly (16 round journeys) 12 months later.

In its application form the Office of Rail and Road, GWR said: “Network Rail has identified a direct connection between Bristol and Oxford (via Swindon) as a high strategic priority in numerous strategic studies including the Oxfordshire Rail Corridor Study (2020) and the Greater Bristol Rail Network Strategic Study (2023).

“Network Rail believes there is a strong strategic case for this ‘missing link’ service to be delivered.”

Regular Oxford–Bristol direct trains are on the way. GWR has submitted an application for seven round-trips each day from May 2026, increasing to hourly (15 round-trips) in May 2027. Trains would stop at Swindon, Chippenham and Bath, but not Didcot Parkway.

Two trial services currently run on Saturdays, taking just 1hr10 for the complete journey. The service is expected to run with intercity (IET) trains. The application is currently with the Office of Rail & Road for approval: Network Rail says the proposed timetable (‘paths’) would meet its requirements, though with some concerns about increased level crossing risks.

Direct Oxford–Bristol trains form part of Oxfordshire County Council’s new OxRail plan. In a report released earlier this year, transport body England’s Economic Heartland said there was a “quick, affordable and simple opportunity” to introduce them, with benefits for Oxford businesses and connections onto East-West Rail.
I thought the level crossing mention worth highlighting..

Good news... how about Sundays too? Those are especially busy for Bath, Oxford too.

But this is very encouraging, and the 5 car IETs will be a nice service and good utilization. They'd better get cracking on platform 5, as I'd assume p4 would be where this train would turn, unless a turnback / move is done.

Doesn't sound like it'll interface with EWR especially. If it had to move onwards due to platforms and dwell - especially as IET needs a little more turnaround (will it have catering?), Banbury might also be an interesting option. And add a few new direct routes, Banbury-Swindon/Bath/Bristol, might be well received.
