Today, a 143 has wiggled its way on to a 150 diagram

143612 to work:

0924 2U12 St James Park - CDF
1300 2C77 CDF - EXD

When I checked the duty back, I was amazed to discover that the unit isn't scheduled to depart Exeter TMD until 0849. Isn't there an AM peak in Exeter?

The peak is the reason it stays on depot. There's nothing else it could do that wouldn't involve a mid-peak detachment and thus blocking a platform until 0900 when it goes up the hill, or requiring an extra path in or out of the depot or New Yard.

Wasn't that long ago the trip was booked for a pacer all of the time. Was not a fun journey, though at the time there were some very cheap advances available for it!

Driver did ask when the last time we sent one there was! Took some shuffling as only Exeter crews sign them now

Failed at Tiverton, to be restarted at Bristol with a 150. Well, we tried, eh?

Surely whoever planned to put a Pacer on a 3 hour run should be taken to court on charges of attempting to torture innocent members of the public. ;)

I really hope that before the pacers are finally retired, one of them makes it to LOndon. It almost happened before once, a pacer substituting for a HST. Got as far as Swindon or Didcot I think

Absolutely! It would be fantastic to see a 143 at London for novelty value!

Do we think this unit would have made it all the way to Cardiff Central had it not have failed, or would it have been swapped at Temple Meads?

Already happened! Wales & West had a Milford Haven-Paddington service many years ago, basically an Orcats raid on FGW. One occasion it dropped a 143 which cheerfully ran all the way to London. I believe it spent the night on the stops at Paddington then formed the early morning back-working next day.

Didn't it run to Waterloo rather than Paddington?

It has also run to Waterloo as did another W&W service from Manchester via Hereford. I believe that was to provide direct connections into Eurostar although might be wrong on that point. (In the same manner the Night Riviera sleeper ran from Waterloo for a few years.). However the 143 definitely ran to Paddington!

The service the Pacer actually worked (1997 I think) was a 2125 Cardiff Cen to Paddington and returned on a 0045 Paddington to Cardiff. FGW decided to withdraw a 2030 Swansea to Paddington so an ambitious MD decided to step in and fill the gap with a 158 worked service but on this occasion there was no 158 available so we know the rest. The services to Waterloo started later

That doesn't alter the fact that the last unit to depart Exeter TMD doesn't begin revenue service until 0859. In my local area a couple of units have either returned, or are about to return, to depot by that time. One of them finishes its morning's work at 0730!

Would love to see a photo of that!

Why, when you receive replies, do you regularly have to question statements by people who, by nature of their occupation, know better.

Whose statement have I challenged?

Post #4. I recall a query a couple of months ago regarding practicalities of a Class 319 working on a Sunday morning when you were given a reply by "experts" but kept challenging it. I just forget another one now. People are always pleased to give you an answer to any query and to leave it at that. Let's move on now.

I notice that you haven't given any response to my question as to whose statement I've challenged. Got a complaint, but now deciding that you haven't?

You say that people are always pleased to give me an answer to any query. Well, they don't appear to have given one to that contained in post #2.

Another thing I've noticed is that 'tiptoptaff' hasn't made any claim to be a rail professional, but perhaps you know him personally and know that he is one.

Do you feel that 'railforums' should be restricted to rail professionals?

No restriction but after a time members can glean certain information about others and can assess their experience.

I wouldn’t call him professional; that might inflate his ego to bursting point!

TTT’s post #4 explained that it is because of the shoulder-peak nature of this service that this unit can’t come into traffic. To expand:

The services through Exeter at the time the Cardiff departs can’t be strengthened further. They’re already 3 or 4 car and thus at the limit of what most platforms can accommodate. If you used the unit earlier; it would have to sit around in Exeter station during the peak; and cause more of an operational inconvenience.

While it’s not ideal having a unit sat around on a depot during the morning peak; in ordinary operation it’s the least worst option - and during disruption it’s nice to have a spare on hand that can be used to step up. It also, by being such a late departure, allows Exeter depot to service an additional unit overnight; and save this one for when the departures are going off.
