It seems to affect several direct trains out of Paddington - I get the same thing for Cardiff and Bristol.

ISTR reading, possibly here, that a fare of £9999 hides it from the booking engines. Apply a small percentage increase by mistake and a problem ensues...

Well it is a bargain compared to the £10000 first class single from London to Swindon they are also selling!

The best thing is that these are 'Off Peak' singles. The Anytime one is only a bargain price of about £200.

A train ticket between two towns just 64 miles apart has been offered for £10,000 by a rail operator's website.
The direct Taunton-to-Trowbridge trip was apparently advertised at the price by Great Western Railway (GWR), from 22 May through to 14 July.
It means the journey costs £156-per-mile and passengers cannot travel via Bristol.
A GWR spokesman blamed an IT problem for the expensive fare and has since corrected the error.
"We are aware of an IT glitch which has published fares for a first class journey that does not exist," the firm said....

Definitely not a Trainline fault; other booking sites are selling it too.

Here is a screenshot from Virgin Trains East Coast, who use Atos WebTIS.

Edit: the BBC article has a screenshot from the GWR website, which also appears to use Atos WebTIS. Although the initial booking stages look completely different to other Atos WebTIS sites, the 'Journey Details' screen where you choose seat & cycle reservations looks identical to other Atos WebTIS sites.

The article also states:

"On quick investigation, the anomaly fare also appears on GWR's own retailing channels so it would appear that this is a fare setting anomaly, rather than a Trainline tech issue," a spokesman said.

Quite.

They lasted about 3 weeks. Approximately 1 week with only people on here knowing about it (sharing the information at forum events/meals and via PM) an then another 2 weeks after it was divulged publicly. Normally these things are fixed within a day of being mentioned publicly.

I think that lasted so long because Scotrail seemed to lack technical knowledge in how to fix it (perhaps they had a vacancy or staff absence at the time), but if it had got into the media, senior managers would have paid whatever the odds to get it fixed immediately. So perhaps it was a good thing that the media didn't mention it?

Joining you and others on the Fort William Sleeper for £1 has to be the best value trip I've ever done.

My stock of those magic tickets came in super handy for runs North with Scotrail where I was able to do Weekend upgrades, not something many guards will do with a Scottish Government freeloaders consession pass.
