Guy Fawkes Day

5th of November, is Guy Fawkes Day and while it might not be so widely celebrated in Australia, I was wondering what you might do on this day? From what I have gathered its all bonfires and fireworks, so how do you celebrate this day?

I haven't heard anyone call that in years; it's just Fireworks Night to me!

If I was at home we'd be having fireworks in the garden but me and a number of friends are going over to Birmingham University on the train to see their display and funfair. I'm looking forward to the candy floss; I think the last time I had candy floss was at the same display a year ago!

Isn't ironic that nowadays terrorism is utterly condemned & yet here we are exactly 404 years later (the gunpowder plot was on 5 November 1605) celebrating an act of terrorism. :-?

Not really. We're celebrating the fact that the terrorists were defeated.

I suppose the only thing thats odd is that The Guardian isnt calling upon us to abandon the celebrations, and start peace negotiations with Guy Fawkes desendants....

Before firework night theres usually loads and loads of fireworks being let off even on the night theres plenty being let off but this year it seems thats died out aint heard that many a couple of days before and it looks like tonights going to be quite aswell.

My Boss has on one the Saturday Nearest to 5th Nov, and usually spends in the region of £500 on fireworks.

I get to light them too, and he runs away when i ask if he will

Doesn't anyone think about the consequences on animals? I don't personally give a **** about humans getting burned/injured by fireworks & their own stupidity, I just think of the poor pets & wildlife which is terrorised by this inane annual event!

Were not too keen on fire works down at the stable because it scares all the horses and can course stampedes in the field which could course a serious injury if loads horses are running around a field in the dark!!!

I do love big fireworks! We always have a party at the weekend soon after if its on a week day...

Isn't the idea of celebrating Guy Fawkes day to celebrate the fact that his plan was foiled and that he was like hung and quarted or something? Hence why you burn effigy's of him? If you were against the monarchy, which to me sounds strange coming from and Englishman then you would be against G.F.D and not have any part in it?

People would celebrate it here, but unfortunately most states and territories enforce total fire bans, and fireworks are illegal to buy in most states anyway, only to licensed people and most municipal ares require permits etc if you are going to have fireworks, so there is little point in doing much other than having a BBQ and a few beers at home which most would do on week night anyway lol.

But it was interesting to see people's facebook status as:

"Remember, remember the fifth of November, the gunpowder treason and plot, I know of no reason why the gunpowder treason should ever be forgot!"

There was not many Fireworks on the actual Fire works night but yesterday (Saturday) there was plenty going off anyone else experience the same thing?

lol No, none what so ever actually. The beginning of the bushfire season kinda put a stop to that. But I'm sure there was a private party of some description going on somewhere though.

Quite true aswell looking at the bush fires on the telly they seemed quite bad,lucky in britain we have rainy weather!

I remember driving into Sydney in 2001, when the bushfires were just outside the city, and driving along a highway through really thick smoke. It was also a bit odd finding out that one of the roads we drove along that day was engulfed in flames about 2 hours later.

Yes, that happens a bit during the fires, main roads tend to get cut off like that.

In 1993 or near abouts driving through Queensland just North of Brisbane I remember traveling along a highway and seeing fire on both sides of the road!

Believe it or not, there is such a thing as an English republican... just not many around. In the same way, there are English people who believe that we should adopt the Euro... again not many.
