During the adverse weather timetable I saw quite a few units (458s and 455s) stabled in the Guildford carriage sidings between the car park and Guildford Park Road. This is the first time I've actually seen the sidings used. I've travelled through Guildford at various times of the day and they've always been empty- I'd actually assumed they were no longer in use.

Do they see any regular use, or are they just present as contingency for times of disruption?

There's always at least one or two units- usually 458s - parked up when I go though on Sundays.

Guildford up carriage sidings stable about half a dozen units overnight, 458 and 455. The first arrives at 2230 ish, and they are all out again by about 0600.

I have heard that the 10 car plans using the 458/460 merge and the 456s will also see the down sidings back in use for stabling.

If he looked at the rails he would see they are nice and shiny which would be a bit of a give away that they are in daily use.

Last train out is at 0617 ECS to Woking.

There are 1x 4 coach 458 and 3x 8 coach 455s in there every night, the other 458 gets stabled at the country end of platform 6 except on a Friday night/Monday morning when it goes in the sidings for its weekend rest.

The 2 sidings near the substation are due to be brought back into use after receiving a lot of repair work.

The sidings can hold up to 8 4 car units, a mix of 455 & 458, 8 units can be seen there weekend nights, I think a 2 x 4 car unit is stabled in platform 1 (the bay) every night.

Just to correct my own post, 455 driver is correct, the 3 sidings on the west side of the station can hold a maximum of 7 4 car units, the western most siding can hold 2 - 4 car, the other 2 can hold 3 - 4 car each.

There is an 8 coach 455 in platform 1 every night (sunday to Thursday), Friday night it gets split into 2x4 coach units for the Saturday morning, most platforms at Guildford station are used to stable trains overnight.

Lets pick a (normal) Wednesday night shall we, off the top of my head-
P1 8x455
P2 clear
P3 8x455
P4 clear
P5 10x444 (split into 2x5 444 by AM driver on prep)
P6 4x458 and 8x455
P8 clear

Trains can stable on different platforms if necessary because of engineering work etc.
