Not a 77 or a 101.

Another clue, all the guesses so far have something in common with each other which they do not have in common with mystery loco/unit.

I'm thinking designed by Bulleid as well, but I can't think of anything with a grille like that next to the buffers!

Not a Bulleid design, it is in fact diesel powered.

Also, as trains go this one is a bit fruity ;)

The thing all the other suggestions had in common with each other which they did not have in common with this was they had received a tops classification, and the thing this has in common with the class 70 and none of the others was it was built prior to nationalisation.
