A 40 then. Was misled by the number 23 scrawled on the front!

Correct answer

It is actually 1H83 on the front a reference to the book of the same name giving details of loco hauled trains. This is 40162 which was stranded at the end of the scrap line at Haymarket depot for many years. It was actually minus a set of wheels which is proabably why it was there so long.
