Yep - first description from Housman, second from Cobbett

Didn't know the Housman quote, but I read Rural Rides by Cobbett a few months back!

Open floor: as I don't expect to win in this thread I haven't got anything ready.

This town has a model village
In the past it could be reached by the Great Western Railway
It has a connection with Brum
the nearby hills are limestone.

If I had said the hills were chalk would the answer differ?

Presumably if the surrounding hills were chalk, the water would have soaked underground, and it would be Bourton-on-the-Dry, or just "Bourton"?

No - an entirely different town in another area is what I had in mind. All the other clues still fit.

Not 100% sure but I don't think the Forest is chalk anyway

The Brum connection with Lydney would be the same as the place I'm thinking of - and different to that of Bourton.

Go on then, let's do another, and see if interest in the thread holds out:

I am a fairly small town in the Home Counties with a very unusual name. I have no railway station to call my own but I am the main settlement in the catchment area of a nearby station with an equally unusual name. To the south is a village that has its own grammar school.

I do like this quiz - but it's difficult (and I know having devised the odd question) to strike a balance between very easy and super difficult.
