A clue would be that only one change is required from Teignmouth, but almost always two from Barnstaple even though the two are roughly equidistant from the station in the picture.

Apparently the "almost" is not applicable. I felt sure there was at least one service a week that resulted in only one change being necessary to/from Barnstaple.
