The clue suggests that my *first* hunch (which I have thus far ignored) is correct, and that I should be looking closer to home (stupid ITV2). So let's go for Harlow Town. Not the biggest dump in Britain, but still a dump nonetheless. And Arriva (or TGM, no-one seems to know for certain!) operate there. Urgh.

As it looks run down and the tracks little used, I presume this station was the subject of a closure.

(I'm from Southend. It's LEIGH, not Leigh-on-Sea, as with Southend itself. And I so would have had SOC earlier today if I was around; I got it instantly! And not for the first time either.)
If it was Riverside, my being wrong is excusable - I was 4 (possibly even 3) when it closed. Also, I could tell that it was an SR unit straight away, so I assumed it was one of the old Brighton Main Line to West Coast Main Line runs. I doubt I'm the only one either.
N.B.: My 'Net is playing up again. I knew it was too good to be true.

No it's Tilbury Riverside. No longer with us.
This is one of the best railtours I have travelled on 538 Railtours, Liverpool Street Leapfrog. We did all sorts if dodgy routes with a Class 33 and 2 x 4TCs. Details of the route on six bells.
This is what was on the other end.
I want past where the junction was a few months ago and it appears to be a retail park now.

Never mind a retail park, it's a car park...! It is a nice (if short) ride across the Thames to Gravesend (I've only done from Gravesend), but a boring bus ride to Tilbury Town! One Mercedes Vario minibus every 30 minutes, number 99...

There is only a slope at one end. The platform wraps around the buffers at the other, literally three metres or so from Shoeburyness High Street. Also, Platform 3 is shorter than the other two, and starts at the end of the ticket office.

It is progess you used to be able to walk out onto the ferry. Now you have to get a bus. I fancy doing that one day across the Thames.
A trip with something a bit different.

It's nice but really not worth it. And you can't tell where to pay the people until you are actually inside the ferry; they have a bus-like Wayfarer ticket machine! As for the Gravesend end (ha ha), it's a simple walk from the town centre (down a dodgy back alley or two admittedly). Mind you, if you have a Thurrock or Gravesham bus pass, it's free...

33116 was the De Facto loco for the 4tc unit in the early 1990s on charter work.

Its not that bad. The Riverside area isn't really a part of the town itself. Tilbury just feels like a poor relation to the larger Grays.
