I'm not too bothered about the station, but I'd be interested to know exactly what that unit is! I've never seen owt like that before, but my first reaction was something like "At what point in history did Island Line trains wear Jaffa?" hock:

It's a 502 or 503 - what Merseyside had before the 507s and 508s.

And I think Bedpan's answer might be the right one - I don't think that outer track is still there now; from memory the platform road is now the edge of the station.

Sorry folks a bit slow with the answer no one was about last night so went to bed.

West Kirby is the correct answer.

This is a Class 503 it was always worth a visit to Liverpool for a ride on these. By this stage (1985) all the 502s had gone replaced by 507. The Wirral Lines were operated by 503s and Northern by 507s. There are at lease two vehicles that survive. At Tebay (between Oxenholme and Penrith) on the Eastern side of the line they are sheeted over and can be seen from passing trains.

The electrics on the Wirrall did not have quite an extensive network as now. You had West Kirby and New Brighton as now but the line to Chester and Ellesmere Port was only electrified as far as Rock Ferry. You had to change there for Chester and again at Hooton for Ellesmere Port and Helsby, hence yesterdays Class 101 at Hooton (taken the same day). The layout at Rock Ferry was unusual as you had two sets of bay platforms next to each other (side by side) but departing in opposite directions. When the third rail was extended the Chester bound platforms were extended through and joined to the electric network. Helsby to Hooton was the loser in all this as it used to have an hourly service but now the remaining Ellesmere Port to Helsby section just has a token service.
