It was in 1985 when Ayr DMU depot burnt down and you had all sorts of DMUs running out of Glasgow. There were loads of 120s there as well.

My thumpers are NIR ones rather than Southern Region, and anyway, 104s were sh*te. Usually confined to the Midland Region though, and inexplicably used on some longish distance runs such as Manchester Victoria > Blackpool and Southport. They were rattly, dirty, dingy, mysteriously drafty yet uncomfortably hot at the same time, and the air was always heavy with the musty smell of never cleaned moquette. BRCW clearly could deliver on the DMU front as they proved with the 110 Calder Valley sets, but 104s were just pants. And BTW Newton Heath, painting a white stripe along the bodyside did not make them any better.

Go faster strips! As a regular user between Blackburn and Preston a long time ago I can confirm that you would get off deaf from the rattling with burnt legs from the heater. Made an interesting f***ing sound when setting off.

Still far better than current DMUs.
