Hartlepool?

That won't last long, but mine is a guess :(

Barnsley [insert vomit here**]

I do not like BFC one bit.

Sorry Ivo, not Hartlepool.

(I should perhaps add that no offence was intended by the comments regarding how long this one would last - I had suspected one of the many Northern Rail-ites would've pounced on it :))

Nor Barnsley - you're the wrong side of the Pennines at the moment!

Nor Redcar Central.

I should point out this is going far better than I expected or intended :)

However, you are right to notice that the chimneys in the background provide a substantial additional identification clue. Wrong industry, though.

142049 is a Newton Heath unit which points to the North West.

I do not recognise this at all. This place looks as though it has undergone substancial change, the buildings look quite new.

St Helen's Central

Not Billingham

Ok, another clue - the chemical industry is barking up the wrong tree too (in this day and age, though the same could not have been said 50-100 years ago).

Oh, and you're (still) the wrong side of the Pennines :)

TB takes it! Well done! :)

In a nice little GtS nostalgia moment for me, I can now reveal it was a shot taken 5 minutes after (and 180 degrees turned around) from my first ever GtS picture:

:)

The chimneys are of course of Pilkington's Greengate float glass works.

St Helen's Central has been rebuilt recently-ish, which may be throwing you, TB. There's a nice shot here:
http://www.disused-stations.org.uk/s/st_helens(lancs)3rd_station/index.shtml
(Bottom of the page)
showing some similar reference points, but the chimneys are nearly lost due to white-out. The bridge is still in the same place, though. The 142 is stopped pretty much directly over the old subway.

How can Billingham, Barnsley and St Helens all be on the wrong side of the Pennines?

Sorry Ivo, I'd posted overlapping TB's post. Apologies also to Matt, who also guessed correctly.

B****y Northerners <(

Still, one month from now I would like to think that I have been on what is surely England's greatest railway - the Settle & Carlisle! (But on a 221/390?)

I have used St Helen's Central but mine was taken 20 years ago. I have beet been through there for at least 10 since leaving the north west.

Next up.

Yes this is an NR station and it is still in use.

There is only one way to the the S&C 40122 10:40 Carlisle - Leeds 16:15 Leeds - Carlisle with a nice rake of Mk1s. I can see it happening can you?

Sadly not for the moment :( It will be on the 14th of May on my way up to Scotland for my trip to Belfast. Bit of a disappointment to have one's first experience on such a fine line on an aeroplane on wheels, but that's still better than nothing! Not to mention that I wouldn't expect them to tilt on the S&C...

Another wild gues then; Yeoford. (I really can't remember much of the Tarka Line; it got interrupted by my sister getting frantic about her living arrangements...)

<D This is why I tend to do better with Matt Taylor and transportphoto: Southern Region and East Anglia aplenty! <D

Topsham?

If Yeoford is closer than Llandovery there isn't that large an area the station could be in...!
