Getting further... Braintree's been the closest, though the wrong side of the river, given that it's Southern.
The photo was taken a year before electrification.

Maybe some sort of rule that the station in the picture must look vaguely like it does now within the lifetime of somebody on this forum wouldn't be a bad idea ;)

Incidentally, does anyone know why there was right-hand running there? Was it to do with the junction with the Gravesend West branch?

Firstly can you confirm that it is Farningham Road (& Sutton at Hone) which I am 99%sure but maybe 1% unsure
It would appear then to be a Gravesend West branch train hauled by H class 0-4-4T which is taking water. The reason it appears to be working wrong line is possibly that it could be a push pull auto train with the loco at the rear.

It is- sorry, thought I had.

Did trains off the branch terminate at Farmingham Rd- with passengers changing for London, or go through to London themselves?

Prior to electrification some trains ran through to London and few terminated at either Farningham Road or Swanley.

The floor is now open to anyone for the next photo..
