I was on a Thameslink service to Bedford, the driver made an announcement regarding the inter changes passengers can make at London Bridge and then repeated the message in French? And it wasn’t a recorded voice. Are drivers expected to know French now?

Lol of course not, most likely the driver’s background is french or learnt/ is learning french and decided to use this in his or her announcement.
