GTR STAFF question :)

Hey guys

If anyone is reading this that currently works for GTR please would you be able to answer a Staff Travel permit enquiry?

Hopefully by this time next year I might be out of the talent pool and into a job with GTR, I wanted to ask if the Travel Permits are extended to immediate family members?

I have a spouse and 3 children currently living with me, 16 17 and 18 three girls god help me lol

Any info appreciated

You get LEISURE travel for partners and dependents.

Dependents get Leisure till 18 then educational + Leisure travel until 21 (I think)

GTR get travel across all Govia services : SE, GTR, Gatwick Express, Southern, London Midland.

ATOC discount is 75%. Its recently been changed to 75% of the Advance fare (again, I think) (its a crappy discount tbhvfh)

ENHANCED LEISURE BENEFIT FOR RECIPIENTS OF RAIL STAFF TRAVEL CONCESSIONS

The discount available for rail staff, known as the “Priv” rate, has been set at 75% of the full-price fare ever since the Rail Staff Travel Scheme was set up. Using the current fare names, this means the Anytime Fare is used to calculate the “Priv” fare.

On and from 7 September 2014 (date of sale), a 12 months’ trial is to commence and the fare on which a “Priv” fare is to be calculated is being expanded to include day and period walk-up off-peak fares (including super off-peak fares). The time restrictions applying to these tickets will also apply to the “Priv” discounted ticket. “Priv” fares continue to be available at ticket offices and on train (if the ticket office is not open on at the departure station).

The following are not covered by this new arrangement:

Advance Purchase fares
Season Tickets
Any fares that include a London Travelcard
Non-safeguarded (ie TOC) staff only: any fares that include London Underground zone fares, unless making a through-London journey

This new “Priv” rate is available for leisure travel by: -

Safeguarded staff using their Staff Travel Card (no need to date a box);
Non-safeguarded staff using the TOC Privilege Card;
FIP card holders visiting the UK will also now be eligible for discounts on the additional fare types at their prevailing discount rate - typically 50%.

Two examples of the new discounts are shown below (standard class return journey):

1. Carmarthen to Abergavenny

Current situation

£38.40 Fare available to the public for this journey (Off-Peak Return).

£17.20 “Priv” fare - based on “Anytime” fares

From 7 September 2014

£38.40 Fare available to the public for this journey (Off-Peak Return).

£9.60 New “Priv” fare based on “Off-Peak” fares

Reduction in “Priv” fare of £7.60 (44%)

2. London to Manchester

Current situation

£79.70 Fare available to the public for this journey (Off-Peak Return)

£80.25 “Priv” fare - based on “Anytime” fares

From 7 September 2014

£79.70 Fare available to the public for this journey (Off-Peak Return)

£19.95 New “Priv” fare based on “Off-Peak” fares

Reduction in “Priv” fare of £60.30 (75%)

This 12 month trial initiative is being jointly supported by all of the Train Operating Companies who want to provide access to increased UK discounted rail travel benefits for their employees as well as those safeguarded employees in other rail companies. The success of the trial will be evaluated in September 2015.

The discount is crap and is still often beaten by various offers and discounted fares. The best thing is where you get 2-4-1 rail offers that require a valid ticket. Those are included in your travel pass. We can debate those "special" offers all night but its still a little benefit for zero outlay. ASLEF did "try" to get free travel for all reinstated but failed miserably...

If your kiddywinkles are going to university then it will be a godsend

Yeah but there is a small problem lol... or several

Firstly, my other half and I, were not married

Been together 10 years, but haven't tied the knot

secondly, although we all live at the same address, there are three teenage girls, 16 17 and 18

17 year old is my daughter from my previous marriage the other two hers from the previous marriage

18 year old is going to uni next year and its quite a way away hence my enquiry

The other 2 College at the moment

So where do things stand for this?

and would I get totally free travel on the said franchise network?

Im happy with a discount to be fair but would be nice if it was free

My TOC follows the same criteria for spouse eligibility as ATOC do for PRIV; if not married then just have a form completed by a solicitor to confirm you have provided proof that you live at the same address (and the employee signs to confirm you're in a meaningful relationship).

I emailed a few local solicitors and found one who'd sign the form for a fiver.

There is a FAQ's and it should answer all your questions. ATOC are very good and an email or a phone call is always dealt with very swiftly and in all honestly quite superbly.

I wouldn't worry about it until you get employed, passed rules, passed traction and your part 6, then roads and probation. Benefits will be the last thing on your mind.

I note your on both GTR and SE threads. I'd worry more about employment first

Yeah I am on both, I applied to SE as well but that's not going to be happening for a long while I think

I wouldn't say so! Quarter rate Off Peak travel is a fantastic concession. What offers and discounted fares are you talking about? If it's ones that tie you to a specific train, which you're only likely to get if booking 12 weeks in advance, I'd sooner stick with the walkup fare!

The recent change has come about because many folks discovered that it was cheaper to book in advance for some trains than using your staff discount. The full standard fare - 75% wasn't always the cheapest option. Hence the change. There are still plenty of fares that are cheaper to buy (anecdotal)

If it was a flat rate discount (at checkout) then it would be freakin awesome but as you say. The walk up and pay fare is where its the most beneficial. Its going to be reviewed in Sept 2015 so I hope that those who use their facilities on a regular basis and can pick the system apart and find the flaws.

Usually information on travel benefits is found on the staff intranet - or otherwise the member of staff who deals with travel benefits. GTR reportedly inherited all of the travel perks from FCC, barring the First My Rewards scheme. That also includes the Priv Rate Oyster PAYG for TfL rail only leisure journeys, for active staff and dependents.

Years ago, you used to have to be married for your partner to get 'dependents of staff travel facilities', then it was changed to partners who'd lived together for x number of years.

Now there is no time limit, but you must swear an oath in front of a solicitor that you are a couple in a relationship living at the same address.
Once that is done you send the birth certificates of the children in to ATOC staff travel which prove they are yours or your partners children (your step-children) and you'll all get passes. Over 18s need to be in full time education (up to age 25 I think).
