You've all got there with info before me - suffice to say that should final tests be successful, handover is indeed expected in the early (well, less early than now) hours of this morning. Possession still in place as I type, though. I believe there may be some ECS moves of passenger stock to test the track too.

It's been a very hectic day all round with most rail routes via South London experiencing some sort of disruption at one point or another this afternoon. As soon as tickets have been accepted on one route, it's seemingly experienced problems, etc. etc. Lots of people waiting several hours in total at various places to get home/to destinations tonight. Basically unavoidable with so much being diverted and amended, but for anyone who's been travelling, thanks for - generally speaking - your patience on a boiling hot day...

I've just passed through on the fast line towards London Bridge. We slowed down whilst passing Forest Hill. Is there a temporary speed restriction in place?

I recall we had a 20ft hole appear in PF9 at Euston one afternoon when I was "in charge" - the up DC 313 stopped short thanks to alert driver....no great harm done.....and the platform could be used for a 3 car at the country end. Under caution of course.

Turned out to be part of the 1837 Euston station cellars - which had not been been capped properly in 1965 /66 - about 40 tons of ballast shovelled in overnight did the trick ...
Fascinating. They did they need to cap the cellars? Where they disused?

Line is now re-open.

A four word post - re-opened! How difficult is it, really? Sorry, not aimed at you alone, but the forum seems to be descending into text-speak chaos! It's a text-based discussion area, can we not even bother to get the words right?!

Just look at the line-side from the window if you can - there will be speed restriction boards if so.

Well said. Some posts on this forum are getting really difficult to understand and the meaning can be the opposite to what was, I guess, intended.

Will there be a TSR there until the track has settled down there?

It will be an ESR (emergency speed restriction) not a TSR as it would not of been published in the notices.

Currently 20mph TSR over the affected area.

As I said it is an ESR not TSR.

Drivers via their route knowledge will know all there permanent speed restriction.

All TSRs are published in advance and drivers will be aware of them via their notices.

ESRs via there very nature are imposed without notice and have extra trackside warnings to alert the drivers of there approach.

A 20mph ESR was imposed on the Up Fast for a distance of just a couple of chains over the site of the sinkhole and became a TSR pretty much in time for most crew booking on for the late shift yesterday.

Of note, some ESRs do end up in Notice Cases.

Probably about the same time we get our copy for the panel.

What do they use to warn drivers?

Please leave matters of this nature to forum staff. We do have standards of legibility and readability and we try to enforce these. We have to be mindful, however, that typo's are a fact of life, as are certain conditions, which can make it a difficult balance to get right.

OK - I'll let my proof-reading skills/problem leak out elsewhere. Apologies.

emergency speed indicators with flashing white lights in advance of the speed restriction
Thanks for that. I once saw some flashing white lights before the tunnel after leaving Guildford station. I guess that was similar.

I'm a bit confused as to why the ESR is longer for the Up Sussex Slow than the Up Sussex Fast, when pictures over the last few days have shown the hole was under the Up Fast?

I travelled over the up fast this morning at about 0915 and we slowed to about 15-20mph through the site. I didn't notice if the slow has a TSR or ESR.

Yes they both have a 20mph ESR, however the Up Slow is twice as long as the Up Fast, both terminating at the same point.

Seems to be a speed restriction through Forest Hill today, and probably yesterday. Big pipes alongside the track, (outside the railway fence) so assume more work being done on sewer by Thames Water

Safety track inspections today at Forest Hill mean all trains from Brighton terminating at Gatwick Airport.

Other trains to London Bridge on the mainline route seem to be mainly terminating at East Croydon, although one helpfully terminated at Preston Park. That was a train from Littlehampton.

The 7.52 from Haywards Heath is being advertised online as going to London Bridge but I expect that to change soon or for the London Bridge part to remain delayed forever.

Apparently it has. The 7.05 from Uckfield arrived at East Croydon 5 minutes early, great for those that want Croydon!, and is now off on the diversionary route.

Problem is the 15/20 minute delays builds up quickly in to an hour or more and we run out of trains by the peak hour service tonight. Hopefully Southern will learn from last time and cancel a few in the day to ensure hey can run a service this evening

Into London Bridge only 5 minutes late. Can we have more sinkholes please? ??????

The ESR notices showed the same start and termination points, so I guess the difference in locations is down to whoever placed the boards.
