I notice that we've recently had a few threads about people buying Groupsave tickets and then not travelling as a group, which some TOCs T&Cs insist on. In some cases, this may be due to the passengers not familiarising themselves with the rules.

I presume that each passenger is issued a separate ticket so that they can get through gatelines more easily, but might it be worth considering issuing the whole group on a single coupon, "ADULT FOUR CHILD NIL" in the top right corner. By making the passengers share a physical ticket, it would re-enforce the fact that they must travel together, and I think that there'd be less chance of the group splitting.

On a related note, are there any occasions when tickets are issued to multiple passengers nowadays? All tickets I've seen that are for more than one passenger on the same coupon have been British Rail era.

EMT groupsave are issued as 1 coupon, although they stated 1 adult but at the price for 4 (including groupsave discount). I have seen Northern Duos issued on 1 coupon.

Evening Group tickets in the Network West Midlands area are issued for four adults on one coupon for each leg.

An aware of 3 people who travelled on a ticket that quite clearly said 1 on the Matlock branch 2/3 years ago

When some of us bought an EMT GroupSave ticket a few years ago it printed as Adult ONE, but the Ticket description was GROUPSAVE DAY 4. The Booking Clerk told us not to worry about the Adult ONE description. Am I on the right lines? (Assuming your reply is some sort of puzzle)

EMT (and some other Tocs) do their GroupSave scheme different from the majority, where a discount code is applied. Instead they have set up a different ticket type.

No just a normal child's ticket (they were 13/14) and a foreign guard that had a poor level of English so probably wasn't aware that it said 1

I've had a normal day return issued as "adult two child nil" recently on the cambrian coast line. Guard asked before issuing whether we were happy to be on the same ticket.

I agree that groupsave should be on one ticket. The barrier argument is a non-runner in my view, the barriers can't check if the tickets are being used correctly, and being waved through manually is hardly a burden. Plus it would save on bits of paper.

The best thing to do is make all GroupSave and Small Group tickets one product, and simply use one piece of card, and make the validity 'Up to 4 Adults'. They'd continue to be available only on flows priced by TOCs who are happy to price then, but they should do away with this nonsense of invisible TOC restrictions (contrary to NRCoC Condition 10).

Of course that would be far too easy, and they'd probably be unhappy at losing revenue from penalty fares, anytime fares and out of court settlements paid by people who get it wrong under the present system.

I've been informed by a knowledgable person that a standard is that each individual gets issued their own ticket. Quite why this doesn't happen with "Flyaway" tickets I don't know.

I will issue a group ticket on one if it is a single, and especially if something like a big group going a short journey on a night out (and I am fairly sure the station will not be barriered).

The old MML 4-Sight tickets were issued on a single blank at one point...This was subsequently changed to individual tickets around the time they switched from the mix of APTIS + Tribute to all Tribute IIRC, allegedly for Audit purposes.

On Avantix Mobile, what is the procedure for setting such up (pure curiosity)?

I agree if it's a simple journey, but not if the ticket includes a travelcard.

Thanks Flamkngo, it does surprise me a little bit that as it seems as easy as a tick box, why it isn't done more often when.using Avantix Mobile... Anyone with knowledge of other TIS?

At some point (I can't remember without the machine in front of me) there is an option for single or multiple tickets.

The issue is (for me anyway) that (iirc) it's on the last screen you see before you issue the ticket. Normally you just push OK on that screen, as the default is multiple and almost 99% of the time you want to give people individual tickets. So when it comes to Group Save tickets, which I only do occasionally, I generally just push 'OK', then remember that'd it probably be better to put them all on one ticket. By then though the chain of tickets is already printing and I can't be bothered to take back the perfectly valid tickets for non-issueing... :p

FasTis only offers one ticket for multiple people if there are three or more adults or three or more children. For example, if you had two adults and two children you would get four tickets, but if you had three adults and two children you would get the option of five tickets or two tickets. This means, atleast with Northern's machines, that two people travelling on a Duo will be issued with two tickets.

Can't say I have ever done a Groupsave ticket on FasTis though.

STAR will not offer a single ticket for a group except when doing a GroupSave.

Northern Duo tickets are issued as two tickets, one full priced and one priced as £0.00.

I remember getting a train from Penychain to Criccieth a couple of years back when there were 3 of us, and we were issued with a single ticket using some form of group discount.

I agree when it's just one journey, but I'm a regular user of a Z1-6 Travelcard, where they're all seperately printed (with discount code GPS-4), and it makes it a lot easier than if it were on one card, considering we use them about 10 times throughout the day.

We've also only ever been checked that all four of us together once ever (fortunately we were!)
