I have noticed over the last few weeks there has been a lot of talk regarding the trainee assessments. My question is after already taken and passed my assessments but to a pass standard not enhanced, if I wanted to re-sit the tests to gain a enhanced do you need a particular % on each test or just the group bourdon as there seems to be a lot of discussion regarding this test.
As stated I have taken these tests but I am considering re-sitting them as a lot more companies seem to require enhanced. I took mine for Northern but with this new franchise in April and coming under the DB umbrella if this will effect the assessment results. I know XC and GC don't recruit off the street at this moment in time but I'm interested to see if XC, GC and VTEC would require enhanced. I mention VTEC as they are meant to be recruiting trainees of the street next year.

All tocs vary with their definition of enhanced and how many tests are covered by it

Freightliner and fgw do not require enhanced

Gtr aga and probably others have a higher score setting for the first stage tests I think the emphasis is on the trp part one and two and dot test as the dfft is an extra

Some tocs like c2c require enhanced on stage two tests as well and I believe the enhanced standards can be raised and lowered to numbers

The only time a company quotes "enhanced" is when there are too many passes to process therefore they need a base guideline to dwindle the numbers down.

Hi guys first post on the forum. I have been practising the GB test and I have seen people's results and from all the research I have a rough idea of where my scores need to be.

The only thing I'm struggling to get my head around is the row fluctuation.

My latest score is

0.0708

It's always 0.0....something

I'm doing 5 sheets at 2 minutes each can someone please explain why my scores are so different to others.

Think I will be happy to do one test every Sunday and hope that my natural ability will shine through, maybe both Saturday and Sunday if I am lucky.

I wish I had the time to do 5 tests every day but I suspect that the law of diminishing returns will come into play at some point; 14 rows per sheet is quite commendable though.

Thank you for the elaboration. When you say in your earlier post, "download sheets and do 5 every day," I am left wondering, five of what? Maybe it is me who is thick.

If you cannot commit even this do not waste your time to apply and do the assessments...

Bit harsh but after 3-4 years with no success apart from passing all the tests in the old system apart from the CBI (Structured Interview), I do wonder if I am wasting my time but after receiving positive feedback after my very recent train simulator experience on Friday and after feedback from colleagues on the Wensleydale Railway in my role as trainee guard, part of me wishes to continue until I use up my two lives or I actually land a job as train crew, whichever comes sooner.

Even practising on a Sunday can be a strain if I have worked on the Wensleydale on a Saturday and I have to assist my disabled mother with her shopping on a Sunday morning.

Seriously though, 14 to 17 rows is very commendable. I know you do it on paper but the most I have ever got is 61/62 rows on the computer across all 5 sheets.

What would be good is if there was a touch screen version of the GB test for use on tablets and smart phones, save the endless key tapping. I would produce one myself but I do not have the time or resources.

download sheets and do 5 every day, no more and of course check for omissions and mistakes. After 10-15 day you will fly through and will get 14-17 lines per sheet for 2 minutes! More than enough to pass well above any standard-national or TOC!

Sorry but practising will give a false result, if you cant pass it without copious amounts of practising you shouldn't have the job at all let alone apply. For you to say if you can't commit to practising don't apply just shows what a farce the whole application process is.

I can argue with you a lot but at the moment have Browken smoking bus in the middle of nowhere so will mention only this:
Mo Farah and U Bolt have enourmous natural ability to run but they train every day for many hours!!without this probably they even won't qualify for Olimpic games!

Many students have a very good ability to study but they
Study as mad in order to have perfect A levels !No one Uni will take them without these A+ levels just because they have ability!!!
They need to prove it through hard practising and study!!!

But Mo Farrah and Usain Bolt are not taking an assessment for a job, this has been brought up before and this is the reason why so many fail at interview, before the availability of these forums and the practice material (I have had hundreds of PM's asking me for interview answers) it was almost unheard of anyone failing a managers interview now most do and this is down to the volume of passes in comparison to say 15 years ago.

I am not deeply wrong at all and my opinion is it is giving a false result especially for the GB test if you have to practice it every day to be able to pass it.

I did one practice on paper on the way down to the assessment and passed so every day would of been over kill for me.

There's a reason you only get 2 shots at the assessments........It's because they are looking for people who have the APTITUDE for the training/job not those who need copious amounts of practice just to get through the assessments.

You certainly won't get numerous attempts at passing the training course.

They need to prove it through hard practising and study!!!

Granted, students do have to put the effort in to get the grades as you would do with any achievement but it is not strictly true to say that no one University will take students without A+ levels. I was offered BCC from two institutions but managed to surpass these grades btw.

In my DMI we discus the training program and the manager said to me that it is not unusual during the course some people to be approached with the "good news" that this course obviously is too difficult for them and they have to live for good!

I literally had to reread your post for about three or four times before I realised that what you meant was that the trainees had to 'leave for good' as they were not up to the demands of the course. Possibly because they had practised intensively beforehand in the assessments.

Rubbish. Practice certainly doesn't hurt, but there are hundreds if not thousands of people who have passed the tests without even being aware of the existence of this practice program.

And equally, as posts on this forum prove, many people have spent hours practicing and still failed.
