@TDK - No worries! I realise it's very different out on the mainline.
We were told we couldn't ask questions / talk once the test had begun, hence the fact I couldn't ask for a new book. Also, the other candidates were distracted by the pencil markings in very much the same way. Perhaps we're all unsuitable - and I say that in honesty, not in sarcastic tones
HOWEVER (and this one's for choo~choo as well), there were 4 of us there on Friday. One was the Northern Rail conductor who had told me they give priority to internal applicants. She said one of the guys who'd attended on Monday had been back for the 2nd assessment on Thursday and got one of the 2 Sheffield jobs. She and I were the only 2 there for Sheffield. Both she and another lady went home after the computer test. They were borderline passes, whereas I was an average pass.
During the structured interview the lady kept asking me for different examples from the ones I'd given in the answer booklet. (I think there were 2 questions that she wanted different responses for.) She kept drilling down and was rather pedantic. On reflection, I think this was an interview technique to see if I was unflappable. Hopefully I did well enough but I find out midweek. Not holding out too much hope though if the conductor knew that her colleague had got one of the jobs within 24 hours of him attending.
Ah well, I did my best. Will keep you posted but it's fair to say it's been a rather intense week!

Sorry for the delay. I emailed NR to chase on Wednesday and yesterday morning received an email confirming I've been offered a position, my medical is in York on 03 January and any offer would be conditional (presumably on results and references). It's felt like a long 2 months and I still won't believe it until I have the results of the medical! No reason to worry about it too much, but obviously no beer for me after Christmas!

Buy the psychometric test books and a BopIt 2 Extreme and practice, practice, practice! Answer initial interview with examples using the STAR technique (Explain the Situation, Task, Action taken and Result) and for the structured interview remain calm despite the grilling! Sounds simple when you put it like that but...
