At one time it seemed like almost every farm in the north-east of Scotland had a grounded carriage or van body. One of the ones from the Peterhead Quarry Railway is currently under restoration.

The Knotty Coach Trust have just doubled the number of known NSR bodies with retrieval of three derelict examples from Rudyard Lake, which had slipped off the radar.

There are still quite a few wooden bodies (coaches and vans) out there. They need rescuing before they completely disappear.

Had a short break at Rudyard Lake last spring, was told by a local that the two storey lakeside holiday home in the attached image was infact to railway vehicle bodies combined. They were delivered by rail as the former North Staffordshire railway (Churnet Valley route) ran alongside the opposite shore, then brought across the lake by boat!

There is quite a bit of stock at Oakamoor sand sidings, I am not sure what is there but most of it has been the since at least the 90s possibly much longer.

I thought it meant it is grounded like an airplane or kid and can't freely move. Wheels surely don't matter??

No grounded means it's had its wheelsets (bogies) removed

If your looking for a specific vehicle the Vintage Carriages Trust Survey has a very comprehensive database of vehicles including many grounded bodies dotted around the countryside.

Some of the beach huts on the Cumbrian coast are based on old 4wheel coaches. I've been in one and the owner said that you can't knock a nail in the wood because it's so hard. You need to look very hard to recognise them but a clue from the outside is a section of curved roof.

I'd always thought it still had bogies under it, though I did see a photo of it being craned into place without so you might be correct.

Many grounded van bodies have been re-used as horse stables, storage sheds etc - as someone correctly identified in an earlier post. Perhaps the best examples of railway coaches being incorporated into homes can be found in Sutton-on-Sea, Lincolnshire.

There's been an abandoned Underground train in the sidings next to South Harrow Underground station for what seems like 10 years, maybe more, completely covered in graffiti.

Shocking waste of resources; that train (1983 stock) is barely 20 years old and been there for about half its life if not longer.
