Any help appreciated here....

This afternoon the car started making a grinding noise at low speeds, it seems to be coming from the rear. It goes away under braking and over about 30mph, and reappears when the brakes are released. I've had a non scientific poke about, and one of the rear brake pads is loose in the caliper. Could this be the cause? The effectiveness of the braking is the same as normal.

A Toyota we had got a bent backing plate touching the rear rotor which grinded occasionally. They are also known as dust shields but can be thin metal that gets the elements so has surface rust. We just moved it back a bit from the rotor to resolve it for now.
