Work has recommenced this week on a new footbridge/lift at the east end of Grimsby Town station linking platforms 1 & 2.
This was originally started in the summer but work had to be halted because the council had not given planning permission.

Given that there are level crossings either end of the station, putting lifts in is a bit overkill IMO. The existing foot crossing, properly upgraded would have been a much more cost effective solution.

Indeed, but of course the public are not allowed to use the barrow crossing without being supervised by a member off staff, so its far from ideal - particularly for passengers arriving from Cleethorpes/Newark/Lincoln who haven't pre-booked for there to be a member of staff waiting to let them accross!

Does anyone know what will happen to the existing footbridge?

I spoke to one of the station staff when work first started and said when new bridge was complete the old one could be demolished.
I was told no the old footbridge has a preservation order on it and it had to be kept in usable order.

Yet unsupervised access over the level crossings is okay. Come off it, the risk is the same, with the right mitigation. Wellowgate and Garden St are never going to be closed or bridged, so why all the expense of a footbridge in the station confines?

It is all to do with EU Directives and the requirement to minimise risk. Risk minimisation is by removing the people from the track, and is achievable so therefore it must be done.

And of course all new work on stations must meet the DDA requirements, hence the footbridge with ramps at Barnetby that would shame a football stadium.

I totally agree with you, I wasn't supporting what I said above but thats how things are operated sadly, and if legislation means staff have to assist people over the barrow crossing then I guess it makes more sense to build this new footbridge.

Oh don't get me wrong, I know WHY its being done legislation-wise, I just think its overkill given that there are unsupervised pedestrian crossings at either end of the station, which are both much busier than the station will ever be.

'Tis a crazy situation where REAL risk is not minimised, especially when there are at most 4tph across the crossings.

*sighs*

Barnetby would be a little different, given its isolated location, lower lighting levels and greater number of tph at a higher speed than at GMB. Damned ugly structure though.

Related to Grimsby Town considering its the main line out of it. Anybody know why is it that for the 50 or 60 miles it takes to get to Doncaster, the linespeed is a paltry 55mph? With a small consideration for the waiting connection time at donny, it can be (and usually is later on in the day) for it to be quicker to travel from London to Doncaster than for Grimsby to it.

Is the line crap or too much freight on the line or something?

The amount of freight certainly doesn't help things, thats why the line is plagued with temporary speed restrictions all the time! But as you say, even the maximum line speed isn't particularly fast.

Basically, the line is crap, although it isn't 55mph all the way. Between Grimsby Town and Barnetby, the line speed is 60mph, although from Habrough Jn to Barnetby East, the line is certified for 90mph running, and has been for quite a few years. For whatever reason though, everything is limited to 60mph.

Wrawby Jn - Thorne Jn is 55mph all the way, apart from a brief 25/40 PSR over Keadby Swing Bridge.

Thorne Jn - Hatfield Colliery is 60mph, after this though, it different depending on what direction your travelling ....

To Doncaster. 85mph Hatfield Colliery - Bentley Jn. 60 mph Bentley Jn - Marshgate Jn. 25 mph Marshgate Jn into Doncaster station.

From Doncaster. 25mph Station - Marshgate Jn. 80mph Marshgate Jn - Hatfield Colliery.

Ah right thanks yeah. The only noticeable thing I have ever realised is the speed the train accelerates to at Hatfield, the 185s absolutely blast the section but only does it for about 25 seconds!! Otherwise its just a trudge for most of the journey..don't they know how mind-numbingly boring that a lot of North Lincolnshire is?! :D :(

I'm always left thinking after that Hatfield section does it really have to be that slow apart from a tiny tiny section.

After Hatfield Colliery, the few miles of 85mph running make next to no difference though.

Assuming the driver of the 185 sticks to the line speeds, they will arrive in Doncaster at xx35 or x36. If the driver wants the award from being the top ECO driver in TPE, then he will trundle along at the line speed prior to Thorne Jn, IE. 55mph, and the train will arrive right time in Doncaster at xx39 !!!!

It surprised me as well when I got a couple of drivers like that last year ....

Its a shame really that it takes so long to get from Doncaster, as it really isnt competitive against the motorway.

I can fully understand why the linespeed is so slow to Thorne, because that ground moves so much, being mostly peat and with the amount of freight on that line, theres no wonder the formation moves. Similarly between Appleby and Elsham

But quite why the linespeed between Barnetby and Grimsby is so slow beyond me. Its not as though there are any significant curves nor is the ground liable to excessive movement, except around Great Coates.

Shame really, given how busy the trains from Grimsby and Scunthorpe usually are, it could be a good route.

I've been looking to visit a friend in Barton recently and I've noticed that NRE tries to route me via Hull and a bus ! (from Wakefield/Leeds). Needless to say there's no way I'm paying £24 to travel on a bus so I shall be travelling via Donny anyway :D

You'd add an additional hour on to your journey just to avoid a bus? :o

In the good old days  The prefered way from Grimsby - London was via Newark. Much of the line between Barnetby and Lincoln is 75mph, Lincoln - Newark is a bit slower but plenty of 75mph. It is a shame a lot of the connections are not very good now.

I don't know if it is worth EMT trying to take the London - Grimsby flow away from TPE. Doncaster is a better connection point but Newark should be quicker overall journey timewise if the connection works. An example of when it doesn't

1750 London KX - Newark is overtaken by the 1800 outside Peterborough. The 1800 is non-stop Doncaster and a good connection out of it. However going the otherway in the morning both the 0604 and 0704 are significantly quicker via Newark.

The line via Lincoln also used to offer the quickest time to Birmingham, now it is quicker to change a Sheffield following CTs running down of the service (once direct). Again not sure if it is worth EMT fighting back for this flow. The 153s are full enough as it is!

The route to Lincoln from Barnetby isn't helped by the painfully slow 15mph junction at Wrawby. There are plans to upgrade this, but when it will happen at these hard for cash times is anyone's guess. Scunthorpe link is 30mph, and Brigg is 40mph (currently everything is under a 20mph TSR, though), so it does make you wonder why the Lincoln connection has remained so slow for so many years.

Slow progress being made uprights and about 50% brickwork done on both platforms.
Latest estimate for completion early May.

That's rather pretty- much nicer than the current "standard" NR bridge!

Yes, when I read this post I thought it would be like that nightmarish thing at Barnetby which is now "a footbridge with a small station attached to it".

All they need to do now is let more light into the station maybe with a glass roof and it will be a decent station.
