Any idea why it has one? The platforms are long enough but no passenger train on this route run as a 9 car. Thanks

Maybe the route was originally cleared for 3x 314s but is redundant now? Can't recall seeing any other 9 car stop boards on the Inverclyde line but would imagine there may be more somewhere.

I think it may be an historical legacy from the 60s / 70s (i.e. the Class 303 / Class 311 days) when 9 car trains along the corridor were not unheard of in connection with the shipyards and industrial plants that operated along the route. There were 9 car trains over on the north side in connection with the old Singer factory too.

could it have been for 9-car boat trains?

I'm sure I remember there was 9 car trains during the tall ships event in Greenock back in 1999 too.

Looking at that picture it seems rather unfortunate to have a signal box with its signals plated "GPL"....

Driver: "Hello signaller, yes your GPL GPL 101 is not displaying any aspect".

“Hello signaller, yes your (Ground Position Light) signal Golf Papa Lima One Zero One is not displaying any aspect”

No confusion there.
