Maybe this belongs more in Fares Advice and Policy but I plan to make a return journey from Northallerton to Watford Junction. Was thinking of avoiding London to get cheaper advances (looking at late August all of the cheap advances have sold out to KGX or WFJ) but still some good fares to HAT. So was thinking of getting the 724. Anyone any experience of using this and more importantly what is the price like?

Unsurprisingly, I have used it many times, living in Hatfield!

It can sometimes run a little late but is usually fine. Quite busy but it is to be expected - you'll probably still get a bay of 2 to yourself. Absolute maximum return on a day will be £8.50 which is the Explorer ticket allowing you travel on any bus in Hertfordshire, but I'm not sure what the normal single/return fares are but as it is a 'premium' route the prices are a little more expensive! It's not bad, and preferable to going via London if there is a time saving :)

Took the 724 from Denham to Heathrow a while back and a Single was around £3.20, which I didn't think was excessive, having recently paid £3.00 on the 505 from Chingford to Waltham Abbey. (Also operated by "Network Harlow", aka Arriva).

As noted, it ran slightly late, but then that's only to be expected on a route with an end to end journey time of three hours for much of the day!

Have you looked at going to Birmingham using Cross Country then London Midland to Watford?

Nothing much wrong with the 724 providing you don't mind being stuck on a Citaro...... Now back in the days when it was run with Leyland Tigers with either Plaxton Paramount or ECW B51 bodies it was a much nicer way to travel :D

It probably won't affect the OP but the Explorer Ticket is no longer accepted between Heathrow and Maple Cross.

not 100 per cent sure but can't you book easybus tickets on the 724.

Thanks for the replies. In the end found some reasonably priced Northallerton to London advances, and same for the way back using trains at slightly inconvenient times and have decided to go from Euston to Watford Junction using oyster PAYG, as the friend I am travelling with gets slightly travelsick (apparently) and says she can't cope with an hour journey on the bus.
