Is it true that the majority of the DMU cascaded by the use of the EMU on the lines of useage in West Yorkshire, in that particular re-allocation, would still remain on other parts of the eastern side of the Pennines that needed fleet strengthening there? As far as I know, only two or three of these DMU were intended to strengthen peak-hour services on the Caldervale line.
The real benefit will be Northern running their existing services properly. Reliability problems with the 321s (plus the fact that only a 321 can rescue a 321, meaning if two are out of order the third unit has to be idle), so the Doncaster - Leeds service is often DMU run.
Since there are no "spare" DMUs that means taking three coach 158s off the Caldervale line (to deputise for a four coach EMU), which means putting a two coach DMU on that, and therefore shortening another service from two units down to one...
So, just having sufficient EMUs to run the current EMU-diagrammed services will mean a few lines don't have to have short formed services.
There is also the benefit of a few DMUs being diagrammed to run services which are wholly under the wires, which should spare a unit to run on the Caldervale line for much of the day.
