Hi guys, been following the thread since I applied for both the roles on 16th April. I've just received an email today stating if I've completed any psychometric tests, and if I have I should reply. I've only done the SJT, and just wondering if anyone else has received an email like this? Also goes on to say its just for the trainee depot driver... nothing about mainline. Also to put peoples mind at ease, the email ends by saying "currently shortlisting applications". So we should all hear back soon, fingers crossed!

There was 17 questions such as " An engineer is trying to fix a fault on the train when a customer comes over and is getting upset about being delayed do you 1) try and calm her down
2) tell her to go to the information office to complain
3) file a complaint for her


Wasn't anything to difficult, just think SAFETY first with your answers, did you apply for both depot & mainline? If so watch your inbox as you'll have to do the exact same test a second time for the other role, mine came through 2 days later for depot

Think I’ve only applied for the mainline did not see one for Depot I’ll double check when I get home later, thanks for the info

Hi mate. The assessment is a simple situation judgment test, a number of situations to which you have to answer what you would do. If you have a read back through this thread, you’ probably find a bit more information

Applied and have been asked to now complete assessments totally new to this new a in a few days. Reply from GA took me completely by surprise thought the process would take months not days. I’ve booked a days course this Sunday with a company called how2become in Maidstone Is anyone else going or has anyone used this company before? Are they genuine? Found it through Traindriver.org but the forum on that site looks old can’t see any recent post.

Any information would be greatly appreciated

I think alot of people will tell you just check the forum and you will find all the information you need. I would agree with all of them, I've been through the recruitment process and everything I needed was on here I can't stress that enough. At the end of the day it's your choice and money. Thanks for the reply it’s much appreciated, very new to this as in the first few days. I booked myself on the day course a while ago so might as well go and see what I can pick up even if it’s the experience I can share with others.

I’m so new I haven’t even heard of what all these assessments are and what one is for what purpose. I looked at a practice SJT one online yesterday. Are they all basically the same? A question with 4 possible answers of which we have to select the correct answer or can they be 2 or more correct answers?

I’m sure I’ll pick it up as I go along, this is also the first time I’ve been on a forum online. I drive for a living and have very little IT / Computer experience.

Thanks onelowban, I've been reading through your posts, slow down, relax and wait for the next train got it lol

I had thought they would probably only be taking on a dozen or so trainees at a time with all the driving hours required

Does the training differ between Depot & mainline? If you qualified for one role would you be able to change roles afterwards or is the training different?

I'm applying for Norwich Depot as first choice which sounds like a less popular option reading on here so that's a plus for me only 30 mins from crown Point so nice and close

Do you have to qualify on each type of train once you actually pass out? Usually drive past Yarmouth station 3/4 times a day and see several different class 37/ 47 &68 from direct rail services plus the older single coach trains, probably jumping to far ahead again lol!

Depot and Mainline is different training, depot training is around 9 weeks then I believe you have to do around 25 hours before you qualify.

We had 3 on our course that came from depot driving so for that transition you would need to do the whole mainline course. Although the ones that were on our course knew a fair amount about traction already due to prepping trains as a depot driver etc.

Going from mainline to depot driver I’m not 100% but I would assume a small amount of depot specific training would be involved.

Yeah I think Norwich is less popular so you should have a good chance.

When you do the traction module of the course you will learn the specific traction used on the routes you will be driving on. I did 317s and 379s for example on the West, on the East the guys did 360s and 90s etc.

At the end of each class traction course there is a test, passing this will ‘sign’ you on that traction ready for your hours.

Hi All, Newbie Alert!

First of all, big thanks to OneLowban for starting the thread off and for all the responses so far (of course thanks to the rest of the group too).

Brief history:

Mechanical Engineer for 14 years and former light duty and heavy duty mechanic for 10 years. Salary similar to fully qualified Train Driver.

Applied on 1st May for MainLine driver with Liverpool St and Ilford as closest stations.

Score of 10 which does not appear to have much meaning yet I.e. good or bad...?

Invited for SJT on 2nd May and completed on 3rd May. To add to many of of the useful opinions on this, I do believe that this also takes personality into account and also how accepting you are of authority.

I have seen post on this already but just to be sure, what I would really appreciate is the following to be clarified (providing I make it to the next stages of course lol):

1. With my background, am I safe in saying that I should account for:

a) Year 1 entirely for training at £29-30k/yr.

b) Year 2 being fully qualified at full salary of circa £50k/yr

....or is there another salary step in between?

2. Looking at the GA website for application process, it appears to be generic. Step by step, what are the next stages after the SJT?

If you are mainline at a depot then you can do everything a depot driver does at that depot. On rare occasions you may even be diagrammed to a depot job. Is that what you were after?

I applied and I live about 90 minutes away even though it's only around 15 miles away in Heathrow area. I have to take 2 trains to get to Ilford but once cross rail comes i could get to Liverpool street by using a single train in 30 minutes.

As you have completed the SJT, I believe you join the waiting game now. Looking at some others it seems they are emailing candidates asking if they have completed the psychometric tests already, dealing with some of them and shortlisting those who haven’t done the tests.

As you have applied for the West, if successful, training salary will be £30k. Once qualified the salary will be £36/37k + Sundays. Then after one year qualified the salary will be £50k + Sundays.

I didn’t do my assessments with GA but I believe the process is SJT > stage 1 assessments > stage 2 assessments > DMI > medical.

Thanks. So if I understand correctly, you need to have one full year as a qualified driver before you get to full pay? So if the training period ends up being 12 months then potentially I would need to wait for two years before I’m on £50k which unfortunately isn’t economically feasible for me...damn!

What you have to consider is, could you get to Liverpool st for 5am. Ilford for 0430?
