Cheers, indeed.

Looking at the layouts I still don't get where the Aventra capacity uplift over a 321 is coming from - is it just because there are fewer vestibules and cabs? The seating layout is hardly luxury, but other than the odd row of 3-side airline seats (that'll be fun) it's not vastly different from the 350/2 layout which while not *great* isn't the worst in the world, and I definitely prefer the 2-side airline seats over a game of kneesie on a 321. Fewer bogs than 12.350/2, though - indeed, half the number, which isn't great if they are not reliable.

Underfloor heating - excellent. The conduits really do get in the way of foot space on most units. Though I still wonder why trains don't just heat/cool the air then circulate it rather than heating from below and cooling from above which is so primitive.

FLIRT renderings aren't I think new. I'll reserve judgement on the LEAN seat until I've sat in one. I note that the FLIRT doesn't seem to have layouts specified.

Working it out, as I recall the centre vehicles in a 321 have around 80 odd seats for 20m. Go from 20m to 24m and add the extra space created by using through-gangway stock and you can probably get a 25-30% increase on that giving you 105 odd seats. The rest are made up from tip-up seats in the vestibule. It does actually add up, though I'm not sure how good an idea the vestibule seating actually is.

No sign of the plug sockets and seatback tables in the renders I notice, despite being present in the text. Given these renders are in the new proposed livery and have the seat moquette applied, I wonder why they weren't shown?

08700 is leased by Bombardier from Harry Needle. It's been at Ilford for at least 18 months and is used when necessary. It's main use lately is for shunting DLR units into and out of A shop.

It's currently stabled on the shunt spur due to a lack of space caused by the MTR 345's

DLR units in Ilford?

How would they get there & why?

I am slightly happier with the Aventra, especially as there appear to be an area front and back that has wider 2+2 seating for passengers like me who have a disability which makes the smaller seats problematic on bad days.

The seat back tables are also good, as is the loss of heating ducts. One diagram even suggests arm rests on the double seat configuration, though that may be a red herring.

Overall, my only real worry is the comfort of those LEAN seats. Can these be found elsewhere on the network? I'd like to give them a go.

Yeah, I'm no fan of 3+2, but I don't think the Aventra is terrible. If LM was to replace the 350/2s with these I don't see that I'd be screaming with displeasure. Indeed, it'd mean no more single 4-car sets, so that'd be good. 5x24m probably would be a good sensible minimum for LM services, 4 car is very rarely adequate, and 8 is often too much off-peak.

I am rather hoping that GA use more than a 5 car when West Ham, Arsenal and Chelsea are playing at home on the same day, as happens quite a bit. I have a feeling though that it will be mainly 5 cars off peak and at weekends which could be a bit too cosy when on busier days when there's a few events going on in London.

3+2 Airline seating? Has that ever been used anywhere else, that sticks out for me and is another corner that is cut to add to the list of the pack them all in like sardines mentality, 3 toilets on a 10 car as well seems about one too less to me, but 2 on a 5 car is about right.

As for the FLIRT's, too early to say anything else that hasn't already been said since they are the renders we've already seen, still impossible to judge leg-room in standard class, although the render they are using being at a diagonal view which would make it looks like there is more space than there actually is and the lack of a side view could have a reason behind it.

While of cause airline seating with three abreast is always going to feel 'cosy', the airline seating could prove popular with the presence of seatback tables in the previously linked to presentation. Obviously there will be a preference for the 2 abreast rather than 3, but the seatback tables would allow people to work and give somewhere to put that essential cup of coffee or tea. If I'm correct they will also be the first 3+2 stock in Anglia to have seatback tables, which the 317s, 321s and 360s all lack. So an improvement over those in that area at least, and given that the mock-up images didn't show then, maybe this is the first result of the feedback GA has been asking on them.

One thing that really caught my attention about the Aventra's was the move to underfloor heating. This in turn mean that legroom is freed but for window seat passengers with the removal of the body side heaters, which is an issue I've had with the 700s in comparison.

However not everything is positive, as the 1146 seats on the ten cars and 544 seats on the five cars is a slight mistruth. It appears this figure does indeed include the flipdown seats as well as the wheelchair spaces, but oddly not the flipdown seats in the wheelchair area on the 5 cars only, whereas the 10 cars they do appear to have been included if my maths is correct. The reality of this is that the 10 cars have actually got 1030 proper seats and the 5 cars 479 proper seats. Still a good amount, but not exactly what GA has been publicising.

357s also have a row of 3+2 directly behind another at the vehicle end, I'm sat opposite one now. I don't really see why it's an issue as long as the seat pitch is better than the Northern 150s where at 6'0" I physically don't fit in the seat.

On the 357s that's the case, here's hoping the same is true of the 720s.

To be honest, during the weekends, that is when they should be utilising the 10 car trains, weekday off peaks are generally lighter loaded than weekend off peaks as the weekend you get those going up London so during the week they can get away with 5 car running as most off peak GA weekday services are 4 cars at most and these dont tend to become full, only exception is the Loco Hauled MK3s which are always busy off peak regardless of the time of day. Hopefully GA will also have all services stopping at Stratford at some stage

357s have very comfortable seats and im 6'6, even the 321s have comfy seats, worse for me are those on the 360s in airline style

The marketing blurb put out by GA when they won the new franchise last year said 'May 2017 72 extra electric carriages'

Does that refer to GN 317s?

Will they all move to GA this month?

Anyone know how many extra diagrams they will be used on and the services? Presumably they will mostly be used to strengthen the West Anglia shoulder peak services that still run as 4 car 317s?

321s and 317s, for GE and WA respectively as you might expect - as far as I'm aware all the GN 321s are already in service - not sure about the 317s, I'm still seeing some really tatty GN-liveried ones at Ilford.

For the 321s they're mostly to cover for maintenance of existing units plus the few that are out for the Renatus programme. For the 317s I'm not sure. I'm not aware of any plans to make major changes to the timetable on account of the extra units, I took it to simply be a means of improving fleet availability but I could be wrong about that.

I do agree that 360 seats are the least comfortable of the three due to the firmer base, but don't see what that has to do with them being airline or facing? My point is, if 3+2 airline can work on 357s, it can work on other stock. Just keep the pitch sensible! It isnt easy to tell from the layout diagrams how sensible the seat pitch on the 720s is going to be, but looking at the numbers I think it might not actually be that bad.

I guess it seat pitch and the shape of the seat back, the 357 seats have room for knees where as I find the 360s I have to sit upright to fit and it results with knees jammed against the solid metal seat back

They need extra 317s as the franchise agreement has them getting 26 of them brought up to 2020 compliance and having SDO(!) fitted.

Just noticed this article on 'breakingtravelnews.com':

"Stansted Express boosts services to meet growing demand
11 hours ago
Over 29,000 extra seats per week will be available on Stansted Express trains from May 22nd.

With demand for Stansted Airport continuing to grow, the additional seats will ensure that holidaymakers travelling to the airport by train can continue to enjoy a comfortable journey.

The additional seats – over 5,000 every week – have been made possible by increasing the number of carriages on the trains where possible, taking many trains from eight carriages to 12.

Eleni Jordan, head of sales, Stansted Express, said: “As demand continues to grow we are delighted to be able to offer extra seats on our services this summer.”

With trains every 15 minutes and a journey time of just 47 minutes from London providing the fastest to Stansted Airport, recent official figures have demonstrated that it is also the most popular form of transport, above the coach or car."

Any truth in this? Can't imagine they will use 317s on StanExp, so that means 379s from the 3 12 car Cambridge peak services, and balancing parts of those diagrams, going 317? Or are they just going to diagram 379s more intensively, but seems unlikely as currently 27 of 30 in use on weekdays?

As I understand it, it is correct. The plan was for one Stansted diagram (pair of 379s) to go over to a pair of 317s, with the 379s used to increase two other Stansted sets to 12-car. Presumably they can't change Cambridge diagrams for some reason - perhaps due to splitting and joining during the day?

Like Wivenswold I too am happier now I've seen the detail of the presentation, (thanks for sharing), some concerns still remain however;

The design of seat; I don't believe that the LEAN design has been confirmed for the Aventras? The renders look more like Fainsa or the Quantums being fitted to the Renatus units. Confirmation would be nice to know.

I too agree that the tip-up seats in the vestibules will be more trouble than they're worth causing unnecessary angst between those trying to board and those already in the vehicles, surely it should be all about speedy boarding and alighting not incumbering the doorways. There will already be 15% fewer (but I admit wider) doorways on a 10 car vs a 12 car. Again the proof of the pudding etc...

Summary of points discussed with Abellio 'Stakeholder Engagement Adviser' yesterday evening:

General

- What is the seat pitch and how will the seats compare to those on other contemporary stock like the Class 387, 700 etc?
>He did not have seat pitch figures available unfortunately, so these have been requested. The seats will not be the same as the controversial ones on the 387s and 700s, but beyond that I don't have much specific info.
There is currently a mockup of a Stadler unit already in existence at Norwich. An Aventra mockup is underway at Derby and will be ready within a couple of months. However, as these are full-size mockups they are not suitable to showcase in stations.
We laboured the point that the passengers should have a say on the seat design before units are arriving for test en masse and strongly suggested that an individual seat demo, as per Northern, is conducted at Liverpool Street. This has been passed on and highlighted in his notes (I observed him doing so) as the most important point regarding the new fleet.

- How will the power/USB sockets on the units be configured? (Not shown on the current renders) Particularly with regard to the '3 side' on the Aventra 3+2 seating since power sockets on such a system is unprecedented
>For this, he was specific regarding the Stadler IC units, Standard class gets a power socket & USB port for every pair of seats in Standard, a power socket & USB for every single seat in First class. I didn't establish if that also applies to the regional Bimodes.
Information regarding the power socket config for the Aventras wasn't available to hand, so I'm waiting to hear back about this.

- What is the capability of the PIS fitted to the new fleet, how does it compare to existing second generation displays (e.g. Class 700), and will the system fitted be the same for both types of unit?
>Generally speaking the system is to be considered similar to that of the Class 700, though he did allude to the possibility of extra (arguably less useful) info appearing on the intercity units. The system will use colour displays to show stopping patterns and loading indicators at the very least, though loading indicators are apparently on a 3-level scale not 4-level as per the Class 700.

Aventra

- How many 8-car off-peak services will be shortened to 5-car?
>All down to management once the fleet is introduced, so we won't know yet. I didn't receive a 'many / few / none' answer.

- Will the 10-car fixed formation units be restricted to peak time usage? If so, will this not create a maintenance discrepancy between units that cover fewer miles and don't work the late night services?
>Seemingly it looks like they might, but I am a little concerned about this, ending up after a few years with tatty 5-car units and still immaculate 10-car sets. Again though, this is more of an operational issue that could change dynamically once the fleets are introduced.

Flirt

- Where are the seating layouts for the Stadler units?
>These seemingly were omitted from the presentation, they are around and will be passed onto us in due course. No doubt they will be shared as soon as we see them.

- What is the unit length (per train and per vehicle) of the Stadler fleets?
>See above, info has been requested

Renatus

- What is happening, and have things reached a point where Eversholt are considering pulling the plug?
>Nothing heard at this stage but he does agree that the value of having extensively refurbished units potentially cover only a few weeks in service before withdrawal is minimal. I suspect we may only hear more of this further down the line.
It did not seem that we had the 'right man' for asking questions about Renatus, but nonetheless the question has been noted.

I had a few other questions but a lot of this revolved around timetabling, which will have a separate consultation period as the new timetable that considers this fleet will be written next year. We also raised the point that rail user groups should have more say regarding the timetable, which has also been noted.
The only point I was able to extract was that the third off-peak Norwich service is likely to be an additional service to the current Ipswich stopper, not an extension of.

Despite an interesting discussion, most of the important parts are at this point unanswered, though I understand one man isn't likely to know the detail for all these points. I'm hopeful that we'll see at the very least the seat pitch and the Stadler seat layouts before long. We'll keep a close eye on the development of a seat demo.

So unfortunately no further forward on the seating question :(

Whilst we may be no further forward in that sense, it sounds like the meeting went very productively and it is great to see that Abellio are being so engaging and that your views are clearly being heard :)

So, a question about the bi-modes. I don't know East Anglia very well, nor the routes therein, but it seems that these units will not be spending much time under the wires at all, and will run on diesel power most of the time. Am I right in this, or did I miss something? Are there going to be any new services using them, or is it just the current ones?

Assuming (as with other bi-modes) that they can change on the move, it'll mean them running on electric into the cities- which means no diesels idling in the cities, and the units can use the main platforms at Stansted Airport. When the Norwich-Cambridge and Cambridge-Stansted services join that'll run all the way from Ely North to the Airport under wires. On the Cambridge and Peterborough to Ipswich services it'll mean they run from Haughley Junction into Ipswich on AC, and there's a daily extension from and to Harwich of the Cambridge service to connect to the ferry.
Plus the franchise commitment to run through services to London.
