Hello
I was stopped after boarding at Tottenham Hale for the second time and I said both times I had no ticket
I had been using the trainline app to buy the incorrect ticket though.
After I was cautioned and told the inspector I have no ticket I knew that this may end really badly if they investigate me.
I got a solicitor and he told me to make a spreadsheet of every time I have ever purchased the wrong ticket. I have used my trainline account and completed the spreadsheet but I have also bought child tickets just using my card and the ticket machine … I don’t know where and when I may have been going off my bank statement alone though.
Do I only fill in the spreadsheet using my trainline account or will the prosecutions have access to my bank info and ticket machine activity too?
This may sound like a stupid question but I just don’t want it to seem like I’m hiding anything.

Welcome to the forum!

The easy way for it not to seem like you're hiding anything is not to hide anything. So while there's no obligation in English law to incriminate yourself, if your aim is not to hide anything then you should make full disclosure. On the other hand, if your aim is to disclose what you need to and nothing else, then you are not required to mention anything that you haven't been asked about - although it would be open to the railways to infer that you were hiding something if they hold information about ticket use that you haven't disclosed.

So on the technical issue of whether the railway will have details of your ticket machine activity: our understanding is that all railway companies can share information that they hold for the purposes of preventing crime. The railway companies own the ticket machines so they will know that card xxx has been used to buy child tickets. The question is then whether they can link card xxx (used on a ticket machine) to you as a user of the Trainline. It seems to me that if you have also used card xxx on your Trainline account then they will be able to make this connection.

Hypothetically, if you have always used card yyy on the Trainline, I can see that it would be more difficult for the railway to make a connection. I have no idea if the railway will have access to sufficiently detailed bank records to find that both xxx and yyy are held by the same person.

If they have not yet contacted you, wait until you receive the letter/email from Greater Anglia. Until then you won't know what exactly they are asking recompense for.
