I’ve received a letter after being caught with an altered railcard ( stupid of me I know) now they’re asking me to pay £175 I’ver the phone if I plead guilty. My question is that would that be the end of this case and it’s fine or can they still get back and ask me to go to court or to pay £1000?

Sounds like something to ask them, whether it's an out of court settlement being quoted. If it is, you're getting off quite lightly and I'd recommend paying it!

Surely "pleading guilty" is something you only do in Court. Are you in fact saying they are offering a £175 settlement to avoid the case going to Court? As Urban Gateline says, this would seem to be a good deal, given a demonstrable intent to defraud, ie not just an oversight.
As always, it would help if the OP attached the actual letter (personal information redacted), so the experts here are clear about the true position.

If you can show us a copy of the letter (open a reply, click on 'Attach files', don't forget to hide your personal details) that will help us to give our best advice. For the moment, it's not clear which letter you have been sent - the reference to £175 might be the costs they would claim from you if the matter goes to court and you plead guilty, in which case there would be a fine and court costs on top of the £175.

Altering the date on a railcard is a serious matter and can lead to a criminal conviction.

It sounds as though you have been offered an administrative settlement (sometimes called an out of court settlement) in which you pay the train company a sum of money in return for them not taking the matter to court. We really need to see the letter from the train company to understand if this is what you have actually been offered.

If you have been offered an opportunity to keep the matter out of court then pay the money quickly before they change their mind!

Yes, that's an out of court settlement. Pay it and the action goes away.

And we can see it!

So to finally go back to your original question, yes, if you pay the £175 plus the outstanding fare, that will be the end of the matter.

Thank you for the reply this was very helpful. Will be able to sleep now then tomorrow I’ll call up and pay it! I presume I won’t have to send back any letter just pay over the phone as it states?

It doesn't give times when payment is possible - maybe it's worth calling today to find out.
