I'll be in the East Anglia region for a week in September and I'll be in Norwich on Sept 4, going to catch the 09:44 from Ipswich so I can get in Norwich mid early morning. (plus I can't travel on earlier train with 3 in 7 rover ticket)

Anyone think there will be much chance of catching the MKII set to either Yarmouth or Lowestoft at anytime during that day, I'm keeping my eye on the Realtime Trains website but it seems it's just pot luck on the day from what I'm reading here.

Unfortunately the loco-hauled set seems to be out of action until further notice whilst a driver is tied up on the recently introduced thunderbird duty at Colchester. Hopefully something can be worked out to see it back in action soon.

Oh well, fingers crossed it's up and running when I get down there. In the meantime, I'll enjoy the passenger view and your MKII sounds in TS2014 :)

It's great having the thunderbird back at Colchester. The noise it makes outside the depot office gets a bit irritating though. Sounds like an angry duck.

I'll be in the area from 18th august. Does anyone in the know have an idea when the stock will be back? Would be great if the 37 and DBSO produced

Its been there for about a week or so. Came up and just seems to be currently in and out for route learning and driver training.

Absolutely nothing to do at all with GA or the short set.

Short hauled set was in action yesterday on the Yarmouth route. 501 & 853 did the honours even forming a relief service back from the resort at 16.25.

The loco hauled set worked the full diagram today. 813 and 853 doing the honors. Still in the platform at 2100, possibly working the last two Yarmouth trains as football is on?

Think you can travel from 8:44 on a rover, if not buy a single to Stowmarket and use the Rover after that as it will be gone 9 by the time you reach Stowmarket, that way you will get to Norwich an hour earlier

I can't specifically find a written easement to that effect but knowing other similar cases where there isn't an official written easement (08.40 Norwich - Cambridge, 08.44 Brandon - Norwich) I think you be unlikely to find a guard who would refuse travel, if in doubt ask them before you board.

TheEdge, I'm not doubting what you're saying due to your role within Abellio Greater Anglia... however could I ask you to investigate if there is a staff issued equivalent of this extract taken from http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/times_fares/pr7a1a85c35ce741018bbf333fb1a59f.aspx, please?

National Rail Enquiries said:
These tickets are valid for one day from 08:45 Mondays to Fridays and at anytime on Saturdays, Sundays and Bank Holidays with the following exceptions:
  • Saxmundham 08:17 (and intermediate stations to Ipswich)
  • Norwich 08:21 (Sheringham service)
  • Sheringham 08:22 (and intermediate stations to Norwich)
  • Ely 08:28 (and intermediate stations to Ipswich).
  • Thurston 08:30 (Ipswich service)
  • Elmswell 08:36 (Ipswich service)
  • Norwich 08.36 (Great Yarmouth service)
  • Norwich 08.40 (Cambridge service)
  • Cambridge 08.44 (Ipswich service)
  • Ipswich 08.44 (Norwich service)

Regards,

TP

Yea, they're off peak, we don't carry a full copy of the rules but we do all know which "odd" trains are off peak. I know the 07.27 departure from Lowestoft it is off peak beyond Ipswich, peak from Lowestoft to Darsham for all others, off peak Saxmundham to Westerfield for all. We don't need a bit of paper with a logo on it, we're not robots.

You'll also note that Sheringham routed tickets carry a special restriction code, B6 rather than B4 making it off peak without need for a train easement. But again we just know which are which.

The only reason I erred on the side of caution with the 08.44 is it is a train I have never worked and am not 100% sure on the specific restrictions plus there is an oddity in that the 08.44 departure from Brandon is technically peak with no easement.

Probably will do that actually, don't mind paying a couple of extra quid to get there an hour earlier.

Yes 0844 from Ipswich is ok for for Anglia plus (and CDR) as I often work this train. The poster regarding Stowmarket would be wrong anyway as this train is due at 0855.

Is the DRS LHCS service still operating?

Adam :D

Not at the moment thanks to bridge 1288 at Acle. There is a 10mph Sprinter only restriction which was imposed on Thursday due to a defect. All through London services ran yesterday via Reedham with a few late notice service alterations. As most of it's diagram is stoppers via Acle it makes the use of the train pointless.

Thanks very much for the info :) Now summer is over, I can't see the set getting used much now anyway.

Yeah, much better to cancel trains than shuffle the set onto Lowestofts... P-coded cancels of course, so no performance figure failures.

Oh, are things that bad down there still? I thought they had got the majority of their 156s and 170s back in service? Of course if it is needed, it should be used. No excuse to cancel trains unless it is a crewing issue.

Edit: just had a look, nasty AGA

A 156 failed early on at North Walsham at the start of a Sheringham heavy diagram. Less disruptive to nick a unit from a Yarmouth and substitute a bus than leave Sheringhams un-run.

Ah right, fair enough :) Which 156 died?

The cancellations were put in last night (hence the P code and PPM failure not counting) so wasn't relying on anything giving up this morning.

Trouble with that is something gives somewhere. For example when it arrives at 08.30 it would then work the 08.55 Lowestoft. That leaves nothing to work the 08.36 Yarmouth until the 08.50 arrival. Im sure the planning department in Colchester have looked at all options before just giving up.

Wasn't the empty Scud to C/Pt that normally departs Ipswich 11.50 brought back early to save the 10.36? Heard another 156 went down with engine probs.

Think the set is part of a diagram or was that temporary

The hauled set has a fixed diagram, it isn't run on the as needed method it used to.

However at the moment it is de facto finished for the near future. Problems with a bridge near Acle have seen it banned from going to Yarmouth via Acle, unfortunately most of its diagram is Yarmouth via Acle.

Reedham Road was closed for repairs to the bridge, but according to the AA is open again.
Can't find out if it was a temp fix or a proper job though.
