According to the East Anglian Daily Times following a meeting in Ipswich today, it was stated that the hourly Ipswich-Peterborough enhancement is subject to infrastructure improvements that are not yet agreed. These are principally Haughley & Ely North Junctions. I hadn't heard that before & had assumed the frequency upgrade was purely a franchise commitment when the Flirts arrived.

But no news at all on who will be footing the bill [for the works]? :|
Almost certainly some very tricky LC work as well :frown:

Looks like that route will continue bi-hourly. Better news on the East Suffolk which will resume through Liverpool Street services in May 2020.

Good to hear about the Lowestofts, do you know if will they go Ipswich-London as single units?

If anyone gets any info on diagramming could they please let the diagrammers know ;)

The bid was for an hourly Colchester - Peterborough service, but they are in competition for paths with freight services and NR’s level crossing risk assessments.

Don't ever recall a test with a 90/DVT, might have missed it, they have used a 360 and 321, but even those were not really proper tests with a 20 min stop at Ipswich for 'pathing' ! Cant see anymore Nin90 for another 30 years though! hearing the May ones will be a DVT set.

The timetabling would be a nightmare, but for passengers, the ideal would be for through Lowestoft and Peterborough services to split and join at Ipswich to be a single through service from/to London, hourly.

Last Sunday, but not conclusive due to TSRs and a signal check.

These one off tests may prove the running times, but not how reliable it will be when mixed with all the other traffic on the GEML.

Getting it to work on paper would be one thing, but again getting it to work reliably would be a bigger challenge. Not sure even with a blank sheet of paper it would work due to the single line geography of both routes.

The East Suffolk on its own isn't too bad. With the loop at Beccles, double line between Halesworth and Saxmundham and between Woodbridge and East Suffolk Junction passing opportunities are plentiful*. I feel like a lot of the current issues on the ESL are down to the requirement for the down train to reach both Saxmundham and Beccles on time every time to not delay the up trains. And the down trains often get started late due to the tight connection with down mainline services at Ipswich.

*Having written that out I've just realised we already pass a train in each of those areas and due to the signalling up there its pretty squished like that. Thinking more the entire ESL needs a proper upgrade, the track isn't great and the low speeds due to Automatic Open Locally Monitored + Barriers, I mean, surely a crossing is either open or barriered, not both!

That's because they where originally AOCL & the barriers where added to those crossings around 2011. They are not the same as ABCL hence the AOCL+B differential.

The East Suffolk on its own is one thing, but then add maintaining capacity for freight to Felixstowe and you soon run into problems, even with the bit of double tracking currently being built. Add an hourly Felixstowe passenger train and your options soon become very limited indeed.

When you’ve done all that the Peterbrough portion would then have to hit Ipswich at the appropriate time in both directions. No doubt that would result in passing between Soham and Ely ;)

This is always the crux of the matter. How much do you inconvenience other passengers for the sake of getting the intercity timing to 90 minutes. Time them too closely to other services and just one issue at a station stop and the intercity is being checked down. But the other option is to loop stopping services for long periods of time to give them a good chance of a clear run. But how long until passengers of intermediate stations get annoyed of being treated like they don't really matter and ditch the train and drive to an underground station. Long loops from the C/E of Chelmsford to Rivenhall with high speed crossovers are the only solution I have heard that is a good option for that. The one good thing about these new Stadler's is is that they will have comparable acceleration to the EMU fleet so even if they are checked down it won't take long to achieve line speed again.

Sorry that is a mad idea. You need to sort out Ely before you even consider that otherwise that would regularly miss the join at Ipswich. Services are regularly delayed through Ely.

Why does every Tom Dick and Harry need their own through trains to London? There are plenty of services headed that way already. While those trains did used to go straight through to London back in NXEA days there must be a reason why they stopped it.

I could understand extending to Colchester (timetable permitting) as you can then also change onto the Clactons and Waltons but I don't see the need to run all the way to London.

Capacity.

There used to be two EMU services from Ipswich an hour at least four cars long and sometimes eight to London in addition to intercity sets.

National Express replaced the two EMU services with a single two or three car 170 service. Running two car low capacity units with a first class section and trolley area through a path to London replacing two high capacity EMUs was the height of stupidity and they were frequently like sardines.

Thankfully the dreadful National Express era is tong gone.

Exactly. There was a London bound 170 service that would arrive at Chelmsford not long after the morning peak that was timetabled to be set down only. An awful waste of precious GEML capacity.

The through East Suffolk services were very well used.

Isn't the stopping Norwich service effectively restoring that second Ipswich service of old? (Plus the extension to Norwich of course).

I think it's just like for like replacement. There should be some of the Peterborough trains that continue as far as Colchester. The two EMUs from Ipswich off peak where never really required. They where only there because Great Eastern took on (& caught out) Anglia Railways by adding extra services as a revenue raid once the latter went half hourly. One of them was only Chelmsford/Colchester completing the run to Ipswich in around 66mins. The shunt movements required for this at Ipswich twice hourly where a nightmare on top of everything else.

All part of the friendly (?) Anglia Railways v First Great Eastern competition. Another nightmare was the revenue raiding Basinstoke service, that always seemed to get in the way too. The highlight of that campaign was when FGE took over the Station Hotel pub opposite Ipswich station one evening with a big blue and green banner advertising cheaper tickets to London. Caused a bit of a stir to put it mildly.

Moving on to the National Express era, the bid they put in for 170s to Liverpool St was awful and needed a lot of work to knock it into some sort of shape, but it was never going to solve the fundamental issue that a 3 car 170 to Liverpool St is ridiculous for passenger capacity. The saving grace was winning the 2012 Olympic bid. That allowed an operational led timetable that could be strengthened to 12 cars on all GEML destinations if necessary. This too was done under NX in Dec 2010, as was the improved Dec 2011 West Anglia timetable, so they weren’t all bad, unless they had to spend any money.

Bringing all this up to date the through Lowestoft trains are a dilemma too. Too short and you won’t be able to stop many places, but adding and subtracting coaches at Ipswich (or Colchester) isn’t attractive either. Lots of water to go under the bridge until a settled GEML timetable is arrived at.

Back to the FLIRTs, does anyone know when they will next be doing some test runs on the Breckland Line? I fancy seeing one in the flesh if I can.
Also, how is testing going?

Looking forward to trying one in a few months.

Passed a FLIRT in the siding next to Cambridge station itself (just beyond platform 8) with a ROG loco in attendance. It's a pretty beast.
