The long-disused carriage sidings just outside Yarmouth Vauxhall station have been cleared of vegetation during the Wherry Lines blockade earlier this month. Are these sidings being brought back into use or being removed entirely?

The long out of use down side carriage sidings remain through the scheme. One can therefore assume that there must be a future requirement.

Lot of taxi journeys for traincrew between there and Norwich then!

That’s some job that’s been done over the last week or so. Plenty of trees had formed!

No one seems entirely sure why Yarmouth and Victoria have been cleared although obviously the money is on storage for either the new units for GA or someone to leave the off lease stock before it goes to its new homes.

Anything left in either place might just be in danger of acquiring an unplanned livery 'adjustment'.

Most definitely true for Yarmouth, so we assume if they are stored there there will be a security presence, with persistent rumours of a small depot being established there. Plenty of staff live closer to Yarmouth than Norwich so staffing it would be no serious issue. Victoria sidings are quite tucked away and relatively well hidden from general thoroughfare so that might play in their favour.

Victoria will have security provided, and the sidings will be wired too.

Apologies for the query but despite living in Norfolk for 50 years I've not heard of Victoria sidings before; is there any 'connection' with the spur to the old coal depot near the site of Victoria Station?

None at all mate. It's the four sidings next to the down main at Trowse (Lower) Junction.

That’s a good shout to be fair. Hadn’t thought that the existing units may need to be stored before being cascaded or scrapped.

I heard about the sidings at Vauxhall being reinstated long before I heard about the sidings at Victoria. My understanding is that Vauxhall sidings will be for overnight stabling, and Victoria will be for off-lease stock.

Personally, I wouldn't leave a car parked in Yarmouth overnight, let alone a handful of DEMU, but that's just my Norwich bias... (sorry Yarmouth ;))

If it is overnight stabling for the new units then the taxis will make a killing out of it.

Unless they create a traincrew depot at Yarmouth for the locally based drivers and have it as a sub depot of Norwich.

Hi all, this is correct both Yarmouth and Victoria sidings will be made into depots for storing new trains. The company I work for De-Vegged this site some time ago and greater Anglia took too much time to organise so it has all grown back.

It has been tendered for by several companies and likewise the same with Victoria sidings. The triangle at Norwich crown point is also being renewed and this work is taking place right now.

There are a couple of other sites that will be renewed but I cannot disclose where these are at the moment.

Not heard anything more about Victoria but rumour has it Yarmouth has been dropped from the plan.

I can assure you Great Yarmouth has not been dropped from the plans nor has Victoria sidings.
We completed the tender for Yarmouth last week with works planned to be starting end of September and finished by March 2019 latest(contract award is due any time now)

My company currently inspect and maintain all GA depots and work very closely with greater Anglia and nwr across Anglia.

That would be very good news. My childhood was spent on 03 pilots dragging stock into the sidings at Vauxhall & in 20yrs driving trains I've never been into Victoria. Messroom rumours I suppose so we will have to see.

Still nothing happening at Yarmouth. My GA managers seem convinced this is not being taken forward too.

Possibly because of the current plan to store the units on the Mid-Norfolk Railway?

Far be it from me to say 'I told you so' but a great deal is happening at Hardingham on the MNR (my photo from 10/10/18)

Oh yes the MNR plans are obvious & well publicised. That wasn't the question.

The sidings have now been cleared of vegetation again and re-railing and spot sleepering is taking place as required.

Maybe send the Mark IIIs there instead if getting to MNR is proving difficult.

I think to purely send them for scrap is the best option but should that be delayed, dump them here as would need little security until the grim reaper calls.

But they must be standing somewhere now, why move them before they go for scrap?
