(about 158766):
Were they both in the new GWR Green livery?

Today I saw one end of 158766 in the depot; I can confirm that it is green (I can't say for the other end, but I don't see them only painting half a unit!).

(Before anyone points out 800003, that wasn't put into service in a mish-mash part-and-part livery). :)

They won't be satisfied until they have a set running around like this
Power Car CoachA CoachB CoachC CoachD CoachE CoachF CoachK CoachL PowerCar

Well, it's been done with the stock on the Night Riviera last year!

https://youtu.be/Ut15CShYmgo

Anyway, there's another odd set running around this week with a green PC, TF, TRFB, TF, then the rest as usual in Dynamic Lines.

That's quite a bit of 1st class, is the 2nd TF declassified?

There apparently was some trouble at Swindon today, and I heard a member of staff later saying something about GWR having lost two IC125 sets today. On another topic somebody said there was a power car fire, is one now in 'charred black livery'?

Power car 43004 reportedly the one on fire at Swindon this morning, although this is not confirmed. Another service in trouble at Challow later in the day after smoke in a coach.
A uncontrolled evacuation took place which "stopped the job" for some time.

I'm quite supprised by how many 08s are on the livery list, I didn't think GWR would have that many. Which depot is each one based at? I think Landore has two, but which ones?

43004 confirmed as the damaged car. To make matters worse, the good car on the set (43129) failed at Southall whilst working the set to Old Oak.

153380 has gone to Long Marston and 153377 has returned from there.

Saw a 166 or 165 (in GWR livery I think, but only caught a brief glimse as it passed in the opposite direction) out-of-area today on an aborted trip from Cardiff to Cosham; I only made it as far as Westbury. I think it was between Bath and Bristol that I saw it and I wondered whether it had been pressed into west-fleet service early ahead of the planned July date for the Severn Beach line.

Some time around noon? There was a stock transfer between Reading and St Philips Marsh depots. It should have been routed via Hullavington but it appears in the event to have gone via Bath.

It could have been just before noon, but if I recall correctly it was heading towards Swindon, which would probably make it this working from St. Philips Marsh to Reading. Why were they sending a Turbo back to Reading, I thought they were supposed to be moving west?

They keep swapping over in connection with Maintenance and Training requirements.

The Turbos to/from Bristol are driver training runs - same unit out and back. SPM already have all the Turbos they're getting before July.

Yesterday I did see a GWR turbo shoot through Bath Spa at about 12:15 whilst waiting for my delayed 12:07 on the up line, apparently yet another signal failure...

The Down path from Reading to Bristol is routed via Hullavington but the Up one is routed via Bath. They are ongoing Timetabled paths activated when required.

But, of course, can use the 'other' route if circumstances dictate (e.g. major failure on the booked route).

You can be sure that the paths are only activated/used on days when you can't pop out to see them!

Thank you both for the explanations; it seems to make sense training west drivers on them while taking them back to Reading (which presumably remains their home depot until July) for scheduled maintenance.

Don't expect much in July (1 or 2 units perhaps), the majority of turbos will still be required to stay in Reading. The full cascade is likely to be in January when Paddington - Didcot switches over to 387 operation.

West Driver passes up from Bristol to Reading; drives 3U77 Reading to Bristol under instruction/assessment with HSS driver as route conductor.

2nd West Driver takes 3L80 back to Reading; again under instruction/assessment with HSS route conductor. West driver then passes home.

There's also some West Drivers working Gatwick services under the instruction of LTV DIs, but the passing out assessment is always done on the Reading <> Bristols.

There aren't the paths in/around the Bristol area to do handling training up to 90mph, and they're not in passenger service on the west so can't get any training on station duties. That's why there is the near daily running of the transfer paths at present.

Not according to RAIL magazine!

The 3rd peak duty to Maidenhead (that was supposed to switch on 22nd May) goes 387 by 3rd July and 2 additional diagrams go 387 from 3rd July with Turbos shuttling between Reading & Maidenhead during the Peaks!

165124 must be due back soon too!

Publication is somewhat behind the times...

The 3rd 387 circuit to Maidenhead was running by the end of the first week; following careful analysis of power usage of the two circuits that initially ran. More circuits will be introduced as published in the public GWR timetable from July 3rd once Maidenhead sidings are signed off for regular use.

165124 transferred back to Reading on the rear of 3L80 on Friday last week; a year to the day since it previously turned a wheel as a complete set. It's the first 165 fitted with air cooling, and will have some testing to do as part of that introduction.

Excellent news. Have the hopper windows been removed and is it in GWR green?

Ah Rail Magazine, the gospel of truth.

A all off peak services will still be turbos, which still has quite a large unit requirement.

B there still will be some turbos between Reading and Paddington in the peaks.

C I don't think that many units have had the required Ride height mods.

Hence not that many units being released in July
