387130-131 are now at Reading, more 387s are being delivered so the May 2017 peak services to Maidenhead seem very likely to happen.

I think I noticed some electric trains in GWR green when passing one of the depots near Old Oak Common to the south of the main line. That was earlier this week. The wiring from Maidenhead to Airport Junction looks almost complete.

At Maidenhead whilst the wires run from platform 5 a short way up the branch, there's no similar wiring from platform 4. I think the Christmas closure plan is to take out this Branch connection from platform 4 and replace it with a connection from the Reading direction into platform 5. It's not obvious quite where it will run as there are no tell tale unused masts or wires.

Many of the rush hour through trains between Bourne End and Paddington and vice versa are being axed in the New Year and replaced by shuttles presumably as a consequence.

That's North Pole IEP depot which is being used temporarily as a base for the class 387s already running between Paddington and Hayes & Harlington.

Just re-checked it and that isn't the way the track access application reads.

Although the changes to some Bourne End, Maidenhead and Slough peak extra services are contained in the same application as the 6 day week Hayes and Harlington service they are caveated as starting only when infrastructure changes allow. Previously we have interpreted that as May 2017 for Maidenhead changes, it is still given as "summer 2017" in the announcement on GWR's website.

Unless they are running them as split DMU services, which would be silly. A quick check on RTT still shows some but not all Bourne End to Paddington through services in the WTT until May.

At the select committee hearing the other day Mark Carne said he had been out with the piling crew and achieved 17 in one night.
I wonder how many piles have been done and how many still to go.

There's a notice on the platform at Maidenhead station announcing the replacement of one morning and two evening through services by a shuttle. This applies from 3rd January.

You know - that is a great question. What would be absolutely wonderful would be on the Network Rail website an estimation of how many piles are needed on a project and have a countdown that is updated weekly so we could all see. Doubt it will happen but it would be really great IMHO.

How many did the piling crew manage, or was Mark hogging the piling machine all night? Either way it sounds like he should be out there more often - he'd get the whole thing done in no time.

I can see the appeal but there is a lot more to a project than simple pile numbers. There could be occasions when few piles are driven but other work is occurring giving a false impression of progress.

Ok thanks - I must have checked one of the others that still runs. So it must be because of track alterations reducing flexibility - hopefully though no-one is anticipating EMUs after Christmas.

Once upon a time, TML (the Channel Tunnel construction firm) put out the positions of its boring machines every week, so you could see how far (or not) progress was being made.
Before that, they put out fatuous statements like "more progress in the last month than in the previous three months", without giving any figures!
Trouble is there are so many things to measure for electrification (bridges, bases, masts, booms, wires, power supplies, signalling etc) its hard to get simple progress metrics.
But piles are essentially the sine qua non.
I think the total number of piles/bases needed for GW is something like 12 000, although it was never completely clear which routes that covered.
What is clear is that the mountain of piles which sat at Moreton for several years has completely disappeared!

Well from 3rd January H&H to Paddington goes all day

The last plan was to end the direct Bourne End services in May. Looks like that has been brought forwards to January.

With another 14 class 387s due for delivery by March and the wires to Maidenhead already being powered up bit by bit and possibly ready by March, perhaps GWR have an option to start Maidenhead peaks earlier by doing this.

I know, I've actually made many of the posts about it, linking to the various PR and Track access applications. I was referring just to EMUs not appearing at Maidenhead soon after Christmas.

Concur. That is presumably why the track access is somewhat open on the date of the Maidenhead/Bourne End/Slough peak alterations

I did a trip from London to Cardiff yesterday and I am pleased to report some really good progress in certain locations since I last did this journey four months ago, but there is still no wiring at Paddington on Platforms 1 & 2 I am sad to say, perhaps they will get done over the Christmas closure.
All the below is of the relief lines and up main only: -
There has been a big push between Airport Junction and to about half a mile west of Maidenhead with the overhead wiring, I would say that apart from a couple of places, it is all done, there is no sign of the A/T wiring though.
From west of Maidenhead to Reading apart from Twyford station itself and a few places in the Sonning cutting, all the steelwork is up with about 30-35% of the support arms fitted, these are not installed as yet towards the Reading end.
In the Reading Station area itself, about half the support arms are fitted.
Wiring starts again towards the west end of the Reading Train depot on all four lines.
From the end of the test section west of Didcot to where the four-track section ends which is about halfway between Didcot and Swindon, apart from the Steventon gap, all the steelwork is up, long lengths of the return wire and many support arms have also been installed.
About 10 or so masts have been installed in the approaches to Swindon but there is still quite a bit of piling to be done here.
Immediately west of Swindon station up to Wootton Bassett Junction I would say about 70% of the piling is done and about 15-20 masts have appeared.
From Wootton Bassett onto the South Wales main line, piling has started towards Bristol Parkway, presently they are installed for about 5-10 miles up to the first feeder station then there is nothing from here to Patchway
From Patchway to the Seven Tunnel nearly all the piles are in with about 20 odd masts installed as a bonus
Into South Wales, the piles appear again after the M4 bridge, which is the west side of Seven Tunnel Junction, and fizzle out towards Newport after Llanwern, again about 20 odd masts are up.
After Newport towards Cardiff again lots of piles installed but none/hardly any at the Newport or Cardiff ends and I would say 30 masts are up.
So in short, the current end of the electrified lines, which I believe is about 1 mile west of Airport Junction, to Maidenhead switch on early 2017?, yes.
Maidenhead to West of Reading wiring complete?, I would say summer 2017
Didcot to Swindon wiring complete?, I would say very late 2017
Swindon to Bristol Parkway/Newport and Cardiff wiring?, who knows but I feel they will not make the Dec 2018 target, I hope that I am wrong!
I am off to Bristol and back over Christmas so I will post an update for Wootton Bassett to Thingley Junction in about 10 days, Network Rail have posted that a lot of piling will be done in the Chippenham area over the festive break.

Apparently wiring/energising platforms 1&2 at Paddington has been cancelled for this Christmas.

The AT wire is not essential for initial electric operation.
From what I remember the AT wire has still to be fitted east of Airport Jn, so it's very likely the overall installation is part of an integrated plan.
It will be needed for intensive electric working, but that's not for a couple of years.

Any reason?

Is this a temporary setback or a "bi-modes are good enough" "deferred to CP6" decision?

Probably simply that they decided that can make better use of the staff and equipment out on the main line scheme somewhere during the Christmas closure and do Paddington some time next year.

Not everything that happens is a sinister conspiracy linked to bi-modes...

It's still happening, there are electrical clearance issues under the footbridge - similar to platform 13 works - and to meet the requirements of EN50122 there has to be a design that places "obstacles" between live parts and anywhere the public are deemed to be too close to them. Expectation is now Easter 2017.

Not electrifying a couple of platforms at Paddington, which are likely to be used by the bi-modes as often as any of the others, would be a rather strange course of action. The cost saving would be tiny, trains in those platforms would have to run their diesel engines contributing to pollution under the train shed, and there is an obvious risk of driver confusion leading to failure to lower the pantograph and dewirement on entering one of these platforms.

Modern Railways, January, page 28, has the first picture I've seen of the Thames bridge at Maidenhead with an OLE gantry (and indeed wires).

When I was up on Tuesday I saw that the bridge over 1 and 2 was closed and the deck had been removed. A long walk is involved if you want to get from the standard class on platform 1 to the Hammersmith & City line!

That's been electrified for a good few months now. Progress has since moved to areas where wires are still needed between Maidenhead and Stockley Junction.

January edition of Modern Railways, even MORE suggestions from inside sources that the 'deferred' electrification won't be completed. It's apparently not a priority.

The words "farce", "into", "utter" "Degenerated" and "an" come into mind...re-arrange them as you will.

Well, the NR cost and delivery model for electrification is shot to bits at something like £2m per stkm and years late.
They have to deliver something like £750K per stkm on simple 2-track routes to have any hope of resurrecting the wider programme.
Trouble is, decisions about CP6 enhancements will be taken in the next 12 months or so, and NR is not going to complete any electrification in that time that has not overrun badly (possibly excepting GOBLIN).
MR/RF seems to think Transpennine will still be committed because of the Northern Powerhouse agenda, but it's gloomy for MML, especially if they opt for bi-modes in the next franchise.
Roger also thinks CP6 will be about "quick wins" in the rest of this parliament to 2020, where bi-modes win over electrification hands down..

NR's Initial Industry Plan for CP6 is due very soon.
I doubt we are going to see the long-postponed Electrification RUS update anytime soon.

Once again it appears I will probably be proven correct.

I truly am Cassandra... less beautiful though obviously
