Did my quarterly run up the GW main line from Newport today, viewing electrification progress.
It you put a peg in at about MP74 (east of Swindon), nothing much has happened to the west of this point, while the entire line has changed to the east.
Essentially all the line eastwards is fully based, and most of it has masts.
I counted 162 masts on the north side, starting around Uffington, towards Milton (Didcot). This about a third of the route between Swindon and Didcot.
Wiring then starts at Milton, roughly opposite the Daily Mail office, obviously with a full set of masts/registration gear.
The main lines are then complete to Scours Lane (with some short gaps Didcot station-Moreton), while the relief lines have a couple of longer gaps around Goring and Cholsey.
Reading seems to have all its steelwork but no small parts yet. Still nothing much going on at Twyford.
East of Reading the masts restart around Ruscombe, and I counted 61 from there to Maidenhead. (Sorry, forgot a few isolated masts just to the east of Sonning Cutting).
The Crossrail section was a hive of activity, with more steelwork and registration gear than I expected, and much of it seemed ready for wiring.
The Balfour Beatty wiring train was parked up in the depot at Langley with a full load of bits including copper wire.
Sections not quite up with the rest were around West Drayton-Stockley and through Slough, where quite a few booms are still missing.
Maidenhead Bridge has fixings ready for masts, and the awnings at Maidenhead station look finished.
The only wiring on this section is between Taplow and Burnham, except for a very short length of return wire near Iver.

On the western section, there are 10-ish masts up between Pilning and Patchway Tunnel, and the eastern ramp into the Severn Tunnel is fully based.
But nothing much new to the west of the tunnel, other than work to cut back the awnings at Newport station
Between Wootton Bassett and Patchway, no progress at all.
What work there was seemed to be linked to resignalling rather than electrification.
There's still a 5-mile stretch through Swindon with no bases.

So overall, you can see where the priority is going.
Evidence of activity from the many RRVs parked up at access points, and new work sites being constructed alongside the railway throughout.
Another good sign is the supplies depot at Moreton, pretty much empty of piles.

This fits with the "Swindon or bust" idea that Modern Railways reported a year ago.

Swindon has posed a lot of problems regarding piling works, since December those issues have been worked on but there's light at the end of the tunnel and hopefully work will start to pick up now.

My eyesight may be addled, but I was surprised how many mast bases appear to be concrete rather than piles.
Or are they concrete-filled piles? Difficult to tell.
In Sonning Cutting, and downhill to the Severn Tunnel entrance for instance.

There are 2 main ways in which the foundations are built, although there is a bespoke option which are big concrete blocks known as gravity slabs; CHS which are the cylindrical steel piles and conventional piles which are the augered concrete filled ones. Which one is used is decided on by the ground conditions at the pile location. l'm not a piling expert so I'll leave it to others to add the details but I think I've explained the basic concept correctly.

For those of us not in the know, where is MP74? Is it just outside Swindon?

Swindon is MP 77.23, so MP 74 is about 3 miles east.
It's roughly at the point where all the local Swindon sidings and industrial branches start.
East of there most of the route is piled, west of there just the odd few, and none through Swindon itself.

Lurpi, Swindon station is 77 mp is so 74 is east of there, I don't have my Quail map to hand but I reckon it's South Marston.

Judging by the video posted earlier, the gantries around Reading extend until about 1.75 km , or just under 1.1 miles, east of the station. So about 7.5km/4 and two-thirds miles to the east of that is without masts.

Perhaps now would be a good time to ask why (judging by video above) the OLE around Reading is of a different design, and includes one latticework cantilever, which I thought wasn't being put up any more for all-new installations.

I know that the Reading structures went up as part of the Reading area redevelopment rather than under the current electrification programme, but were they really put there without any reference to the kit designed for the entire rest of the line?

The Reading remodelling was started four or five years ago so the design would have been done before that, probably well before the Series 1 designs were available. But I imagine the small steelwork that will be fixed to those structures will be Series 1.

Damage to overhead electrical lines between Reading to Didcot Parkway is delaying services. Network Rail are working to fix the damage.

Anyone know what happened?

Hahaha get used to that. I didn't know the line was energised yet, must have happened recently! Many people will be wondering about that excuse considering ALL of GWR's trains are diesel....

The line doesn't need to be energised for damage to the OLE to occur...

During the installation phase it's also possible that something of a temporary nature has fouled the running line. All it would take is for a strop or tackle to fail and hang down down towards the track.

It happened like that on the Chat Moss line before the OHLE was operational.
I noticed yesterday that there is quite a bit of the new GW OHLE which is up, but not properly in position - around Didcot in particular.
There are various temporary connections to the steelwork, often by strap to keep the wires aloft.
You also get new catenary with droppers dangling in the breeze waiting for the matching contact wire to go up.
Wires sometimes end in large coils on masts or on the ground, waiting for the next section to complete.
The AT wire is generally missing too, with insulators fitted but no wire.
Quite a nightmare to manage I should think.
One would hope the weather stays benign during wiring periods. High winds could be a problem.

Over 40 tonnes of soot has been removed from the Severn Tunnel – an important milestone in the preparatory work ahead of a six week project to upgrade the railway running through the 130-year-old tunnel this autumn.

3,500 hours of work is under way ahead of the tunnel closing to trains for six weeks between 12 September and 21 October 2016. During this period Network Rail will deliver a critical milestone in the project to deliver the new fleet of brand new electric trains, which will result in faster, quieter, greener trains for tens of thousands of passengers in South Wales, set to be in place by 2018.

Network Rail’s ‘orange army’ has now completed work to remove the soot and is carrying out repair and maintenance work during Saturday nights, while passenger trains are not scheduled to run, minimising disruption. A custom-made drilling rig is also being used to prepare holes for the anchors that will support new equipment which will power a fleet of electric trains.

During the six-week closure, 200 members of the orange army will be working day and night to install over eight miles of conductor rail, designed to provide power to the new electric trains. The scale of the engineering challenge involved and the extensive amount of machinery required to upgrade the four mile-long tunnel means that the closure is unavoidable.

Am on a 180 from Oxford to Paddington and while waiting for the train there was a message on the PIS that there could be delays of up to 10 minutes after Didcot due to overhead line issues. Must be a GWR first!

There's a feature by Roger Ford in the new (July) Modern railways, pp. 60-67, discussing in some detail the Series 1 equipment and the history of the decisions that led to it being the way it is. Many points that have been raised in this thread are discussed. I'm still only halfway through it.

To be followed next month by part 2, on the HOPS train.

The up and over lattice masts are still in use on current schemes. Particularly through platforms at stations. With modern day fittings.

Fascinating bits about over-engineering, and how there will be a Phase 2 aimed at reducing the size/weight/complexity/cost as the scheme progresses.
Much is laid at the need for TSI compliance, even though EU funding is minimal.
As a 225kph TSI-compliant TEN route, you'd expect the design to be similar to recent similar lines on the continent.
My impression is that we have a much heavier design for GW.
Standing on the platform at Didcot, you get the impression that you are looking eastwards through an infinite "steel tunnel".

Also interesting that the "cheap ECML design" myth is discounted, with the quality of the maintenance in the 1990s being given as the main reason for its poor reliability.

Going back a long way, however, the same process was visible on the WCML around 1960.
The very heavy engineering of the early work around Manchester, Liverpool and Crewe improved considerably as the wires worked southwards towards Euston.

TSI Compliance is a matter of complying with EU Directives, in effect EU Law. It has nothing to do with finance or who pays for what.
Much of the Energy TSI concerns the pantograph/catenary interface, there's nothing that determines what holds the wires up in the form of masts, cantilevers or headspans etc.

But you can apply for a derogation. They chose not to, partly because they thought it would reduce their chance of getting EU funds. Ford suggests the size of EU contribution they got was not worth it.
