Or for real fun, convert to a tram way and run it all the way to Marlow-High Wycombe. With a longer platform at Bourne End, now there's no junction, for trains from the mainline

Yes please! That would go within 100 meters of both my house (between Bourne End and Wooburn Green) and my office (in Loudwater)....picking the kids up from school in Beaconsfield might be an issue though.....add a triangle up London road and up Holtspur Lane and connect Wycombe/Beaconsfield/Marlow/Maidenhead...SORTED!:D

Having been over the route again today I have to correct my previous post. Up relief between Moreton Cutting and West Tilehurst actually has 3 sections not wired. 2 in the Goring area and 1 section over Moulsford viaduct.

I did a return journey from London Paddington Swindon today, firstly Platforms 1&2 at Paddington are still wireless, the work on the new roof, which is nearly complete, might be holding this up.
All the below is for the relief lines only as I could not see the fast lines, from Airport Junction to just east of Maidenhead I would say that 95% of the masts are up, of which about 90% of these have the boom fitted with about 90% have the support arms installed, on this section there is only one piece of new wiring installed since my last run on this line in February this year which is on the up relief just west of Iver, this is a short run and looks a bit of a bodge!
From Maidenhead to Twyford about 30-35% of the steel sticks are up and I guess nearly all the piles are in. From Twyford to Reading about 80-85% of the piles are in including most of the Sonning Cutting.
The wiring from just west of Tilehurst is detailed in the above post but the up relief wiring goes very close to the electrification depot just east of Didcot.
I did notice that there are no masts installed on the avoiding lines at Didcot at present.
In a previous post there was talk of a target date of Didcot to Tilehurst going live in very late May, no chance, there is a lot to do in the Didcot area, plus the gaps above.:( Does anybody know if the test section includes Tilehurst to Reading depot?
From Didcot to where the four track section ends I would say about 35% of the masts are up and onto Swindon about 70% of the piles are in.
So give it another 4-6 weeks and we will probably see the test section from Tilehurst to Didcot finished and I would expect the Airport Junction to Maidenhead bit to see a lot more wiring very soon.

From 2230 hrs Saturday 28th May:

Reading - Didcot section:
Scours Lane Jn - Milton Jn & the up/down Oxford Lines (including Platform 5 at Didcot) will be energised and from this time must be regarded as Live at all times.

Fri 27th May:

The Electrical Control Room at Didcot takes over responsibility for the GW sections from the electrical control room at Romford.

It has been for a good while now. Used to be at Slough IECC, but moved to Romford about 7-8 years ago. Didcot Electric Control Room will open but will be located at Romford (staffed by Didcot Electric Control Room Operators) for a short while, until the ECR at TVSC is fully operational (hopefully in a few months).

Just don't forget that the 'test section' between Scours Lane at Milton Jct is responsible as for GWML electrification and testing purposes of the IEP. The Airport Jct to Maidenhead section is responsible as for Crossrail, which seeing as thats quite a way off yet, is most likely why that section is further behind than the 'test section'. And Maidenhead to Tilehurst, well that's been put right at the back of the queue, despite there being an electrfication depot in Ruscombe.

That will be an interesting commute for them.
Would be a bit easier if Crossrail existed in time.

Are all the wires energized at Paddington or is it just the ones for the Heathrow Connect/Express that are currently energized?

Given the connected nature of the tracks around Paddington, I would be very surprised if they weren't.

They are. Everything is live from Paddington to Stockley/Airport Junction and onto Heathrow, pretty much everything else, when it's up, should be treated as being live. Reading depot, for example, treat their wiring as live now and have done since it was installed.

I've just noticed some supports attached to the roof of the Severn Tunnel, about a mile in from the Welsh end. Was only a very fleeting glimpse, as the headlight just picked out some steelwork on the roof. I know they've been working in the tunnel for a while, but it's the first time I've seen any visible progress, as it's pretty dark down there!

Mostly Glasgow-ish. Mostly.

Does that include platform 14?

I believe the big switch on has been put back until 25th June now due to instalation delays

I noticed this evening there are wires on the up main over Moulsford Viaduct, where there is a gap in the relief line wiring.

1. Cardiff Central Station: Work will begin in September 2016. The station will remain open but sections of the platforms will be blocked off while work is ongoing.

2. Windsor Road bridge, Cardiff: On July 3, the bridge, which carries the road that connects Adamsdown with Splott, will reopen. It has been closed since January 2015.

3. Beresford Road bridge, Cardiff: On July 23, it will close fully. It is currently reduced to one lane with traffic lights monitoring traffic. A temporary footbridge has been moved into place but will only open once the existing bridge has closed. It will be fully closed to road traffic until March 2017.

4. Full closure of Cardiff to Newport line: Between September 17 and 19 there will be a full closure.

5. Five different bridges to be demolished: While the line is closed, five different bridges will be demolished. They are Beresford Road, Bridge Street in Newport, Maesglas Road in Newport, Hawes Lane and Green Lane – both in the Marshfield area.

Last night wires went up from Scours Lane to just east of Tilehurst station on the down fast.

These are the first wires on the running tracks in the Reading Council area (excluding those in the depot) and the first through a junction (Tilehurst Junction)

Platform 14 has been energised according to Modern Railways May 2016 Track Watch

No matter what Modern Railways says it is not yet live. It's all installed and has been tested but there are issues related to clearances between the end of the Pan and people standing on the platform which may need additional obstacles placed between them to meet the requirements of EN 50122.

Just noticed on the way back that the up fast is also now wired from the east end of Tilehurst station westwards through the station linking up to the main wired section westwards.

Further west, both relief lines and the Didcot-bound fast are now wired across Gatehampton bridge. I think the Reading-bound fast is also wired over Moulsford bridge but got distracted by a phone call there, so not 100 per cent sure.

Wiring has also been started on the Reading-bound fast line just to the north of Goring & Streatley station and on the relief lines through Cholsey station. The wires on the Reading-bound relief line to the north of Cholsey now extend almost to the electrification depot on the site of Moreton Sidings.

Lots of small steelwork attached to most of the portals from Moreton to Didcot but still no actual wires in this area.

See post #2599. Can I also remind everyone that we don't do fast lines on the Western.

Care to elaborate how you can place more obstacles between a pantograph and people.

Simply trying to avoid confusion when identifying which pair of lines we are talking about here - and talking about the main lines on a main line might be a bit confusing to those not au fait with GWR terminology, might it not?

Even relief lines may not mean much to people from other parts of the country, where they don't have such things.

And please don't start about up and down lines...

I believe it was Fast and Slow on the GWR before 1880, following the pattern set by the LNWR. Then someone decided that the GWR would do things differently.

We could simultaneously both avoid and cause confusion by using TID codes.

Never mind. Electrification will bring you out of the dark ages up to the speeds enjoyed on the WCML and ECML for the past few years! :D:D
