Just short of 387s at the moment thats all.

I assume one set missing being the emergency stop unit on yesterday's 17.52 from KGX that tripped when it reached 75mph.

Limped to Potters Bar (FL) and chaos behind ensued.

Those emergency brakes work well though!

For the last two days 2T93 0720 Cambridge North has been 2 x 365 (luxury spare seats at Welwyn Garden City yay!) vice 2x387s. This train normally calls at the villages, so needs to have SDO. Real Time Trains shows the train calling at the villages yesterday, although that could simply be spurious and actually the train past non-stop and it is shown as passing non-stop today. Does anyone know if this a change to the diagrams related to the roll out of 700s on other trains, or simply that there aren't enough 387s available, but plenty of spare 365s to avoid cancelling?

Is it possible they kept the rear unit locked till Royston? It's what used to happen with some morning services using 317s from Cambridge

Presumably the 387 unit from the Waterbeach level crossing smash on Thursday will have been out of action Friday for thorough checks.

It skipped these stations, and the 365s are 'due to more trains than usual needing repairs at the same time' for reasons perhaps already mentioned above.

Or maybe all the buttons fell off... ;)

Saw it departing Cambridge on Thursday, and was definitely non-stopping the villages (was announced as such, and passengers were in all 8 cars on departure).

Not sure they'll now have the procedures in place to unlock to rear unit at Royston any more as per the "olden days"

The 317s were fitted with a primitive form of SDO which allowed the rear unit to be locked out. The 365s don’t have this.

In theory it could be possible to go through and individually lock every door. But this would then take considerable time to undo at Royston, and need staff to do it. Then you have the issue that it’s almost certainly not an agreed and officially authorised method of working, so basically can’t be done.

I am sure there would be an issue with the doors being released at the shacks, even if the train was considered empty because the rear coach was checked and locked out before it started. There's always a risk of an over carry, so I am sure it simply would not be allowed to take into account staff making a mistake.

Shame about the non stopping at the villages but I popped up to London yesterday and it was good to have some unexpected 365 comfort in both directions.

It is done elsewhere -- for example I've been on a Chiltern service from Birmington to London where multiple carriages at the rear of the train were locked out, the train stopping with the relevant carriages off platforms. In this case the doors concerned were individually locked, and through access also being prevented. I forget whether this was on a 165 or 168. The service would presumably have been DOO inwards of Banbury.

So in theory it *could* be done, but as you say it introduces risks, and I don't think it's been done before on GN. It wouldn't be viable on a down service due to time pressure.

I presume it's physically possible to lock individual doors on a 365 with a T-key? There is the advantage of not having to worry about the connection between units.

Yes you can lock doors like that, and the out of use light comes on outside, but then you are locked in and must exit via the cab. It would be far too much hassle as I assume the doors must be unlocked the same way.

Speaking of GN Hertford North is quite an attractive station and an unsual design? I like the airy entrance too with the glass roof

How many 700’s are in service with GN now and is there any diagrams for them available?

In London tomorrow and interested....
