Great Northern 313 Withdrawals

I hope they do one carriage of 313134 in blue and grey, giving a heritage livery at each end of the railtour train.

Rail tour passed FP on its first run a couple of minutes in arrears. The ends have been tarted up (including obligatory headboard on the NSE carriage) but aside from the already shared paint jobs, the rest were in the usual battered old colours.

On time at Stevenage on its way to Hertford North as 2B83.

Then it seems to run:
empty to Hertford Carriage Holding Sidings as 5B84 returning as 5J85 arriving 1310,
to Moorgate as 2J86 arriving 1432,
to Hornsey Down Reversing Sidings as 2W87 arriving 1454,
to Kings Cross as 2W88 arriving 15:25,
empty to Hornsey Electric Multiple Unit Depot as 5E89 arriving 16:06.

If they did a full set in NSE colours there will be complaints about it being a waste of money.

from what I saw on my last few visits.
Tbh,they didnt look at all presentable.
Although I love these to bits,its a real shame they are going but a bigger shame on GN's lack of vision for their upkeep!

They were supposed to have gone many months before, so I doubt the DfT was in any way interested in funding any cosmetic works. Mechanical work obviously took place, although a sizeable number of units I'm told were on reduced power - which is why the service is now so drastically improved.

Obviously there are still some 717 faults and still some driver shortages from time to time, but - touch wood - the service has massively improved and will only get better, especially during the cold weather I hope.

I notice that the NSE logo is slightly off, using Arial instead of the Rail Alphabet, and that the grey rhombus is not slightly narrower than the red and blue rhombus.

However, I will let that through because I think it was done with short notice.

Can’t confirm that but I did see a pair of 313s coupled together at Hornsey when I passed on a Kings Cross service at about 11:10 this morning. I was surprised that they were both in the purple livery (so not the ones used in the farewell tour?)

9 313s remain on depot. No scrap moves took place last week.

There does appear to have been a run from Hornsey to Welwyn and back yesterday at around that time. Not sure if this run was 313s, but if it was then this may have been what you saw.

It is a little sad to see 313s still at Hornsey, in some cases still with lights on inside.

A couple of pictures emerged on a Fb group a few months ago which showed a 313 carriage being torn apart at Newport Docks. Not a pretty sight unfortunately!

Just seen 37884 come through Bristol Parkway, taking a pair of 313s to meet their maker. 313047 on the rear. Managed to get a few seconds of poor quality video.

The class 315 preservation group FB site has some superb photos, mainly of 315s but also 313s. This site contains the two photos of a 313 being scrapped at Newport. Very sad viewing indeed, the scrapping process is pretty brutal.

Think they tend to scrap the 313s and that quickly at Newport Docks once they arrive given that the site is small I believe. However a Twitter pic emerged of one of the 313 driving carriages awaiting the chop at Booths so perhaps the process there is more slower though they would need to get it scrapped soon if they’re expecting more redundant units for disposal.

Southern are still using their 313s and they’ll be around for another few years; they only recently had PRM mods done

Their replacement will almost certainly be part of the next franchise, but there's no scheduled replacement within the current franchise term, which lasts until 2021.

Thanks Ewan M and Mordac, appreciate that. I've sort of gained an interest in the last couple of years in these units as they were part of the ECML scene with the incomparable Deltics of the late 70s and they're a last tangible link with those much missed days. There's so much coverage on this thread I'd wondered if the (19 is it?) units on Southern were also withdrawn.. so still a chance to see a few running...
