Part of me is thinking of cheekily applying, surely there's got to be an argument somewhere that someone leading the railway should have operational experience "on the job"?

Big organisations often have Chairs like this on similar salaries. Met Police had one come up recently.

The role is more about being able to provide your extensive, senior experience - particularly when it comes to areas like governance and stakeholder management - to key situations and being able to steer an organisation culturally.
