Grantham to Nottingham returning on a different day

Hello, new to the forum, been looking at it for a few months. Plenty of questions I'm sure!

Searching for a return between Grantham and Nottingham but on different days. If it was on the same day, it would be £5.50 for an off peak day return (16-25).

Yet there is no option to return on a different day, so two singles (£5.40) is the only option.

I'm sure this is the case for many routes, but why is this so? No way round this I presume but thought I'd just ask..

Quite a lot of short distance routes have no period return for them. Sometimes you can buy a ticket from a station or two back works so you can get a period return, I've got an example from my local line (Hope Valley Line)

E.g. Chinley to Sheffield - travel before 10am M-F on outward/return portion with a railcard, you pay £16.60 for two Anytime Singles. Instead, you buy a return from Marple (3 stops before) to Sheffield, £12.00 Anytime Return. This does not work on off peak tickets as oddly enough, its cheaper to buy two Chinley to Worksop singles than the Anytime Return ticket at £10.45

Obviously I'd think in a lot of cases, its unavoidable and you have to buy two singles.

Agreed. It's the case for nearly all short distance routes.

Not the case here unfortunately.

Curiously enough, even the ticket to 'East Midlands Airport via Nottingham' is only sold as a day return.
