Grantham - Exeter & Return

I'm in the early stages of planning a trip to the exeter records office to follow up genealogy links and my start point will be either Sleaford or Grantham. Grantham is preferred as I can use my over 60 bus pass from Sleaford!

I'm in no rush to get down there, so any route (cheapest possible!) will be OK. I will be travelling at the cheapest days/time and do not mind travelling back on a saturday.

Note that the Records office will be closed 1st to 12th February and I can travel either side of these dates. I would like to spend a minimum of 2 full days in Exeter.

If necessary, I can purchase a senior railcard if there is a significant saving.

It can be done on train specific advance tickets from Grantham for just over £50. There are quite a few at £26 each way, going via Paddington.
E.g. 15/02/10 Dep Grantham 1314 Arr Exeter 1734
17/02/10 Dep Exeter 1800 Arr Grantham 2238
which gives you 2 days in Exeter.
There seem to be £26 singles on most days, so it's just a matter of finding the right times and dates.
Otherwise, there are advance singles Grantham - London sub £10 and London - Exeter for £12 plus tube fare between Kings X and Paddington, but you may have problems if one train is delayed and you miss your connection as the ticket won't be valid.
If you look on megatrain.com there are a few Waterloo to Exeter journeys for £6 each way.

If you don't want to be tied to a specific train it's going to be quite a bit more expensive.
Railcard is only worth it if you will be making more journeys this year.

I like it, djw1981....I had actually thought about taking Natex coach to london and from there to Exeter by train.....
