WiFi on trains is basically one big LAN throughout the train
There is a central receiver, normally receiving via Satellite
This coach is then normally fitted with a wireless Router
Each second or third coach is then normally fitted with a wireless Access Point
The signal strength is then adjusted so that it covers just enough of each area, and as a result First Class and Standard can end up on different routers, allowing First Class passengers free use and Standard passengers PAYG service
This also allows passengers to walk throughout the train and stay online throughout

If you setup your WiFi device to detect the routers then you can count how many there are as you walk from end of the train to the other!

I also carry a WiFi signal strength detector, and this can be useful for future seat bookings

If you board in 1st class GNER,boot up your laptop and pick up the free 1st class signal,then you can simply walk back to at least the middle of the 1st second class coach next to the buffet car and still retain the free signal.
