Grand Central Trains' 'GZ' restriction.

A York to Eaglescliffe Off Peak Return (Grand Central Only £12.80)) has a restriction code GZ. Would the ticket be valid on GC's 1841 from York to Eaglescliffe ( ex 1650 London Kings Cross to Sunderland) ? The GZ restriction on the ticket states that it is not valid on the 1650 from KGX but does that apply to journeys starting at KGX only ? Online sites seem only too happy to sell me the GC ticket for the 1841 .

Seems as if I can only buy this ticket from the 22nd Dec onwards. I've tried for 21st Dec but its not possible. Could Grand Central be lifting certain travel restrictions from the 22/12 ?

It's not uncommon for TOCs to lift restrictions over the Christmas holiday period.

I would read that restriction as barring the services no matter where you join them.

If it was worded 'trains timed to depart Kings Cross at or after xxxx until xxxx' then I think it would be valid but because it specifically says services and then names them I believe it would not be valid. Apart from during periods when they lift the restriction!

However, electronic journey planners won't take into account any stations a train has visited before you join it, so you may find that you can get an itinerary for that ticket, in which case it would be valid.

Hi. Yep GC will be lifting restrictions on tickets from 22nd December for x-mas. So it would be £12.80 for the journey you would be making. At all other times its £13.40. If travelling 0928 GC to York and back 1842 the price £13.10 ticket and this lets you travel on any Grand Central back along with TP services to Thornaby to then double back to get to Eaglescliffe.
Buy the ticket on the morning it will be no different in price. We'll be open from 0650

Depends how they encode it. You can bar a specific train throughout and it does work on the planners. The 1610 Euston to North Wales is barred in this way, see this ticket (scroll down):

For a while the "except MKC" restriction was absent, which was a nuisance as it also barred travel from MKC which is actually valid (VT's franchise agreement bars them from northbound evening restrictions from MKC), it seems now to have been fixed.
