Grand central train shortage

Thought grand central had plenty of rolling stock which was why some of it is leased out?

Grand Central cancellations - 23April 2013

Owing to a shortage of trains, the following Grand Central services on Tuesday 23 April 2013 are cancelled:

• 1022 Bradford Interchange to London King’s Cross.
• 1448 London King’s Cross to Bradford Interchange.

Alternative travel arrangements for the cancelled 1022 Bradford Interchange to London King’s Cross

Passengers at:

Bradford Interchange should travel on the 1034 Northern service to Leeds and board the 1115 East Coast service to London King’s Cross.

Halifax should travel on the 1049 Northern service to Leeds and board the 1145 East Coast service to London King’s Cross.

Brighouse should travel on the 1058 Northern service to Leeds and board the 1145 East Coast service to London King’s Cross.

Mirfield should travel on the 1106 Northern service to Leeds and board the 1145 East Coast service to London King’s Cross.

Wakefield Kirkgate should either to make their own way, use the Freecitybus or travel on the 1105 Northern service to Wakefield Westgate and board either the 1127, 1156 or 1227 East Coast departures to London King’s Cross.

Pontferact Monkhill will be provided with road transport to Doncaster in order to catch the 1216 East Coast departure to London King’s Cross.

Alternative travel arrangements for the cancelled 1448 London King’s Cross to Bradford Interchange

All passengers should travel on East Coast’s 1505 London King’s Cross to Leeds service and then passengers for:

Pontefract Monkhill should alight at Doncaster for road transport from outside the station front.

Wakefield Kirkgate and Mirfield should alight at Wakefield Westgate and board Northern’s 1739 Huddersfield service.

Bradford Interchange, Brighouse and Halifax should alight at Leeds and travel on Northern’s 1723 service to Huddersfield via Bradford Interchange

Class 180's acting up again perhaps?

I thought they had settled down a bit which allowed Grand Central to stretch their fleet while work is done on the other class 180's Grand Central and Hull Trains operate.

The need another unit from the May timetable change as well, as the service that currently terminates at Hartlepool runs through to Sunderland, and the train it previously returned on departs from Sunderland before the inward working arrives. I can see it terminating at Hartlepool on the occasions when there isn't a unit available at Heaton...

180105 developed some problems yesterday morning and is now out of service, pending a wheel skate being found to move it. That has likely caused today's cancellations.

Grand Central had issues with 2 other 180s as well, one with all engines down and another with a transmission fault - not a good day for GC!

Maybe time to order some new Alstom Coradia EMUs, and at the same time tag on an order for 14 3-car "centre car" 125mph capable units.

Rip out the Diesel gubbins from the 180s and reform as 14 8-car all electric units.

Not a bad idea until you get to Doncaster. How are you going to get to Bradford, Sunderland or (In Hull Train's case) Hull without diesel engines?

Push pull with a diesel loco away from the wires as was suggested as an alternative to IEP as while back

Rebuilding the 180s as electrics would be much more drastic and expensive than the recent unsuccessful proposal to rebuild the Voyagers as hybrids. The Voyagers are diesel-electric so the traction motors and much of the power electronics is already there, but the 180s have hydrostatic transmissions.

Had major issues with broken springs on two power cars and 2 on the 180s

Ive no idea why this one is in donny until i return to work but maybe another broken spring.

Haha not it today's assessment PASS is Anything to go by!! I left DBS at Doncaster and saw a 180 looking poorly in the sidings. It did make me wonder what she was doing there poor thing haha. Glad it's my week off.

Great job to be honest though and the 180 is a great train to maintain!! (Honest)

Wouldn't matter too much, I wouldn't expect them to be hybrid units.

Once the traction package is ripped out, they'd effectively be trailers and a DSOL/DFOL. Traction to be delivered by the 3 new-build centre electric coaches.

Grand Central services between Bradford Interchange and London Kings Cross

For full details of these changes and the impact on journeys, please use the National Rail Enquiries Journey Planner. Services will operate between Bradford Interchange and Doncaster only. Customers for London should change at Doncaster for either First Hull Trains or East Coast services to and from London King’s Cross. In addition, owing to engineering work within West Yorkshire, services are diverted through but will not call at Pontefract Monkhill.

There was some talk of the unit needing a wheel skate. If so there might not be the facilities in place to move it quickly or easily from its current location. It may even have to come out by road.

Look at how long it took to shift that 60 at Grantham........

105 was skated out of Doncaster on Friday and has already been repaired at Crofton , any change of service is not down to a shortage of units .
