Hi, just a quick question

Can I travel on a grand central service from Wakefield Kirkgate to Bradford Interchange using a south pennines day ranger.

This suggests not. However if you ask the guard before boarding they may give you permission to travel (but don't count on it). I seem to remember someone on here saying that a GC guard let them travel on a Tyne/Tees Day Rover even though that's technically not valid.

That may well have been me. :D

No harm in asking, as ainsworth has said, it technically isn't allowed but you never know unless you ask. I wouldn't plan my day out on the assumption that they will though.

When on the rover, I always planned to board anyway and most times happily paid the £6 from Sunderland to Northallerton, using the Ranger was just a bonus.

I think it's only £3.25 anyway isn't it, in case they say no?

Apparently not, the only one valid in West Yorkshire is the Metro DayRovers. However the last time I was on from Kirkgate to Bradford no one checked my ticket.

The South Pennines Day Ranger is priced by Northern Rail. For 2010 they published a South Pennines Day Ranger leaflet (attached) and it proclaimed prominently: VALID ON ALL TRAIN OPERATING COMPANIES’ SERVICES ON THE MAP SHOWN, and the map did indeed show validity Wakefield Kirkgate - Brighouse - Halifax - Bradford Interchange. The 2011 leaflet has not yet appeared.

This makes me suspect that the information on the National Rail site is out of date. The fact that the National Rail page linked on post #2 was last updated in January 2010, four months before the Grand Central West Yorkshire service started, reinforces that suspicion.

I would be inclined to email Northern (customer.relations@northernrail.org) asking them to confirm that the statement in their 2010 leaflet still applies for 2011.

And National Rail Conditions of Carriage states that unless otherwise shown you can use any company. If there is a restriction it must be "printed on the ticket".

I can't see GC taking this matter to court and risking hugely damaging publicity over about £3, so I believe they would honour the ticket. (This is not legal advice).

And as I was told once last year by someone I know who works for GC that they only accept the Metro tickets and no other local rovers etc.

The current extract from the Fares Manual is shown below:

I was told once last year by someone I know who works for GC "We are not a TOC and not covered by NCoC."
The National Rail Conditions of Carriage disagree with the first part.

National Rail Conditions of Carriage said:
APPENDIX C - LIST OF TRAIN COMPANIES AT DECEMBER 2009
...
Grand Central Railway Company Limited (trading as Grand Central)
...

http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/times_fares/nrcc/index_custom.html

The Grand Central Passenger's Charter disagrees with the second part.

Grand Central Passenger's Charter said:
This Charter sets out our commitments to you. It does not create any new legal relationship with you as a result of what we say we will do, nor does it adversely affect your legal rights. These are set out in the National Rail Conditions of Carriage which can be obtained from large staffed stations or from our Customer Services team.

I was told that not long after the service started, and I think some of the staff were relatively new so weren't fully up to speed. I deleted that later in hindsight, but the point about the South Pennines Day Rover is only recent in the last month or so I've been told that.

Also, the NFM does not list GC as a valid TOC.
