Grand Central - Newc

On Sat afternoon (about 3.15) I was loitering/waiting for a train to the Metrocentre when an empty Grand Central (Class 180) pulled in to platform 2 and waited for a Morpeth train to leave before heading across the tracks and off towards Heaton (I assume). Not 10 mins after that a Grand Central HST went through platforms 7&8 towards Heaton.

Can anyone shed any light on this? I wasn't too surprised that the HST was there as I expect them to be stabled overnight at Heaton on completion of their day at Sunderland, but the 180? And in such quick succession too? And during the day?

I'm just very interested.

The 180 was possibly ecs that had been on hire to HT going back to Heaton for wash and good clean out.

The only thing I can think is that 1A69 1629 Sunderland - London Kings Cross which is booked a HST was switched for a Class 180.

The HST after coming up from Kings Cross after working 1N22 1120 to Sunderland, runs empty to Pelaw Goods Loop at 1455, waits there until 1610 then runs back to Sunderland to form 1A69. Something May have cropped up requiring the HST to be swapped hence the run to Heaton Depot, so the 180 would have come out of Heaton run into Newcastle then down to Pelaw Goods Loop to replace the HST.

I may be wrong, but this I what I.think happened.

AFAIK, the 180 came up for some maintenance at Heaton, and was the one used by Hull Trains. The HST came off a KGX-SUN train, and went through Newcastle to Heaton
